ROANOKE MAN, 22, INDICTED IN SHOOTING OF TEEN-AGE BOYS

A Roanoke man has been charged in the Oct. 12 shooting of two teen-age boys, one of whom was left in critical condition with a large-caliber gunshot wound to the head.

Edmund Lavonne Jenkins, 22, of Wilson Street Southeast was indicted by a Roanoke Circuit Court grand jury on charges that include malicious wounding and shooting into an occupied vehicle.

Benny Calderon of Roanoke County and Darryl Robinson of Roanoke, both 17, were shot outside a home on Gilmer Avenue Northwest about 1:20 a.m. Oct. 12 , authorities have said. Robinson was shot in the foot. Calderon, who was found shot in the head inside a sport-utility vehicle with a broken window, was listed in critical condition at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital the day after the shooting. A hospital spokeswoman said Monday he was still a patient, but information about his condition was not being released, at the request of family members.

Police have said the shooting stemmed from an argument at a Hunt Avenue Northwest apartment complex, where Calderon and Robinson reportedly encountered a man who arrived to see a girl they were visiting.

After returning to Robinson's home on Gilmer Avenue, the two teens were approached by a dark-colored vehicle, police said. A man got out of the passenger side, fired about five rounds from a handgun, then got back into the car, which drove off.

Jenkins was being held without bond Monday night in the Roanoke City Jail.
