ALBERT RAMSEY DIES; LED BEDFORD

Albert Harrison Ramsey, Bedford's first city manager, died Tuesday in a Lynchburg health care center. He was 78.

City Manager Jack Gross said Ramsey shepherded Bedford during the transition from town to city. Ramsey, a Bedford native, was town manager from 1961 until 1968, when Bedford became a city. He served as city manager until 1973.

The 1940 Virginia Tech graduate served in the Pacific Theater as an Army captain during World War II. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1978 as a lieutenant colonel. He also had worked for Rubatex Corp.

His wife, Margaret A. Ramsey, and two daughters are among his survivors.

Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel.
