         Grayson County High School's Linsey Carico averaged 11.1 rebounds a 
      game and finished fourth in the Timesland girls' basketball statistics. 
      Grayson County finished with a 7-14 record during the regular season.


GALAX DEFENSE DOMINATES 75-31

Galax scored the first 40 points of the game and held Bland scoreless for the opening 12 minutes of play on its way to a 75-31 Mountain Empire District tournament victory Wednesday night in Fort Chiswell.

Bland had one field goal and three free throws in the first half of play and trailed 47-5.

Galax (15-7) advances to today's semifinal round against Fort Chiswell, a 55-33 winner over Pocahontas.

Jill Cockerham scored 15 points and Erin Kyle added 14 for the Maroon Tide. Mandy Blankenship paced the Rockets (0-22) with 11.

Rocky Gap 59, Grayson County 54: Lindsey Carico and Dana Rae Whittington combined for 44 points, leading the Eagles past the Blue Devils in the opening round. Carico, who led all scorers with 29, sparked Rocky Gap's comeback from a four-point first-quarter deficit.

The Eagles (10-12) advance to face Narrows at 6:30 p.m. in today's first semifinal.

Grayson County (6-16) was paced by Melissa Leedy's 20 points and Tessa Andrews' 16, but was unable to overcome a second quarter ankle injury to starting point guard Mandy Smith.

Three Rivers

Radford 57, Auburn 53: Charlee Taylor scored 13 of her game-high 24 points in the final period to push the Bobcats (11-11) past the Eagles (8-14) in the opening round.

Susan Wirt and Sarah Black paced Auburn with 13 apiece.

Radford advances to play regular-season champion Floyd County at 6:30 p.m. today.

Shawsville 57, Giles 48: The Shawnees scored 21 points in the second quarter to erase a six-point deficit and take control against a game Spartans squad in Christiansburg. Shawsville advances to today's semifinal round against Glenvar.

Shawsville's Megan Forster scored 13 points in the pivotal second period and 27 overall, leading all scorers. Beth Burdette added 11 for the Shawnees (15-6).

Lorie Talbert scored 11 points in the opening period to help Giles (5-16) build a 13-7 lead. She finished the evening with 16.

Hogoheegee

Chilhowie 55, Rural Retreat 53: The Indians missed three free throws in the final 13 seconds and fell to the No.2 seeds in a semifinal at John Battle High School in Bristol.

Rural Retreat (15-7) cut its deficit to four, at 52-48, on a 3-pointer. But the Indians couldn't hit from the line.

Kristie Osborne had 15 points and Mary Brewer 14 to lead Rural Retreat. Jane Grubb added 12.

Kristie Poe and Emily Blevins had 20 points apiece for Chilhowie.

The Hogoheegee's junior varsity championship game, featuring George Wythe and Northwood, will be played at 6:30 tonight at John Battle. The varsity championship between Northwood and Chilhowie will tip off 20 minutes after the completion of the JV game.

Northwood 58, George Wythe 40: Senior forward Jill Woodward scored 27 points to lead the top-seeded Panthers to a semifinal victory at John Battle High School in Bristol.

George Wythe (10-12) was led by center Megan Johnson, who had 20 points. Johnson fell nine points short of 1,000 for her career.
