RADFORD BOARD MEMBER RESIGNS

Saying she's got her hands full with new business responsibilities, former Radford University Rector Karen Waldron has resigned from the Board of Visitors.

Waldron inherited five companies following the recent death of her father, Roanoke real estate developer Elbert Waldron.

"There's no way I can run my companies with Fralin-Waldron and give Radford the time it needed," Waldron said. "I don't have enough days to go around."

Her resignation, dated Oct. 31, comes just before Radford President Douglas Covington receives his much-publicized job evaluation, part of a consultant's overall review of the university. Because she is vice rector this year, Waldron had been scheduled to be part of the initial discussion of the review, along with Rector Jim Stutts and Covington.

Her resignation "has nothing to do with the president and institutional review," Waldron said. "I don't back down from anything being part of the review process, I feel very bad I can't finish this out," Waldron said.

Stutts called Waldron's departure "a great loss to the university." And Covington said she has "been a person whose counsel I certainly value."

Waldron was in the final year of a four-year term. Her family has strongly supported Radford, and the school's nursing college was renamed the Elbert H. And Evelyn J. Waldron College of Nursing and Health Services in honor of Karen Waldron's parents.

"She continued the Waldron tradition of serving and supporting Radford University," Stutts said.
