CITY SCHOOL BUSES WILL TEST SNOW ROUTES FRIDAY

The forecast calls for partly cloudy and windy weather in Roanoke Friday, but school buses will use snow routes.

No, city school officials don't question the accuracy of the forecast.

They're conducting a trial run of snow routes to help students and parents become familiar with them.

"We want parents and students to know what the routes are so they can avoid confusion when we have to use them," said Richard Kelley, assistant superintendent for operations.

The snow routes are published in today's Neighbors section in The Roanoke Times.

Superintendent Wayne Harris said Wednesday the schools will use the snow routes to try to keep schools open during bad weather this winter, but he will not jeopardize children's safety.

Sometimes, sidewalks remain covered with snow and ice even after the streets have been cleared, Harris told the Central Council of the Parent-Teacher Association.

"I won't open the schools and put the children in the streets if the sidewalks are not cleared," he said. "I don't want one child bumped, scratched or hurt."
