CAMPAIGN TO COLLECT OLD CHILD SAFETY SEATS

An old, outdated child safety seat may be a good candidate for the "Child Safety Seat Round-Up."

The campaign - co-sponsored in part by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and Baby Superstore - aims to collect as many old, potentially dangerous seats as possible. Campaign sponsors are asking the public to turn in old safety seats that are missing parts, have cracked frames or frayed harnesses, been damaged in an accident or recalled for failure to pass crash tests.

The two-week campaign - which began Friday and will end Nov. 16 - also is sponsored by the Roanoke Regional SAFE KIDS Coalition, Roanoke Valley fire departments, the Virginia State Police and J93 radio.

Safety seats may be dropped off until Nov. 15 at Roanoke City Fire Station No. 2, 55 Noble Ave. N.E.; Station No. 6, 1333 Jamison Ave. S.E.; Station No. 7, 1742 Memorial Ave. S.W.; Station No. 9, 514 24th St. N.W.; Salem City Fire Station No.1, 105 S. Market St.; Cave Spring Fire Station, 4212 Old Cave Spring Road; Hollins Fire Station, 7401 Barrens Road; and the Fralin Center for Community Health Education, 903 S. Jefferson St.

Seats will be collected until Nov. 16 at Baby Superstore in Crossroads Mall.

Anyone who drops off an old or broken seat will receive a $5 discount coupon that can be used at Baby Superstore.

On Nov. 16, all of the collected seats will be destroyed in the Baby Superstore parking lot. A free child safety seat installation clinic will be held at the store that day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

For more information, call Baby Superstore at 563-1100 or Mary King at the Department of Motor Vehicles, 561-7409.
