Imogene Young, director of Christian education at Covenant Presbyterian Church for the past 20 years, will retire from the staff Dec. 31. Young will be honored at a reception at noon on Dec. 8 at the church, 1831 Deyerle Road S.W.

The Rev. W.L. Crane, pastor of Cedar Bluff Baptist Church, has been recognized by the Roanoke Valley Baptist Association as having completed 52 years in ordained ministry. The 1996 Annual of the association will be dedicated to him.

Joel Nitchman, a 1995 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, will leave Nov. 20 for a two-year volunteer mission assignment in Ogden, Utah. The 19-year-old son of George and Jan Nitchman is a member of First Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. |MUSICAL EVENTS| Cenovia and Stephanie Cummins, New York string musicians and former Roanokers, will perform Sunday at 4 p.m. at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church in downtown Roanoke. The sisters' program will include a new composition by Cenovia Cummins.

New Grace, a Southern gospel trio, will sing Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Garden City Baptist Church, 3536 Garden City Blvd. S.E. On Nov. 22 at 7 p.m., New Grace will be at the Gold Street Coffee House of Tabernacle of Love Church, 4535 Bonsack Road.

Evelyn Conner, Southern gospel musician, will sing Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 728 Highland Ave. S.E.

The W.N. Hunter Gospel Choir will observe its 25th anniversary with two programs at Jerusalem Baptist Church, 1014 Norfolk Ave. S.W. The first will be Sunday at 7 p.m. and will feature singers Dwight O. Steele and J. Eugene Young. The second, on Nov. 17 at 6 p.m., is a concert by W.N. Hunter Gospel Reunion Choir.

The High Street Baptist Church Male Chorus will celebrate its 13th anniversary with a program Sunday at 4 p.m. in the church sanctuary at 2302 Florida Ave. N.W. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. |REVIVAL MEETINGS| Howard Baldwin, evangelist and artist, will preach for revival services Nov. 17-22 at Hollins Road Baptist Church, 3502 Old Mountain Road N.E. Worship will begin nightly at7.

The Rev. Dee Flory, pastor, and laity of the congregation will lead revival services Sunday through Wednesday at Green Hill Church of the Brethren, 2699 Harborwood Road in Salem. The first service will be preceded by a potluck meal at 6. Weeknight worship will begin at 7:15 p.m. with singing. |BUILDING CHANGES| St. John's Episcopal congregation in downtown Roanoke has set groundbreaking later this month for renovation and expansion of its parish house on Elm Avenue Southwest. The first phase of a $5million project was approved by the vestry Oct. 21 and climaxes a three-year study and fund-raising program. Later, the church plans to add a community center to the south of the present facilities. Full access for the handicapped will be a goal of the expansion.

Beth Israel Synagogue is installing a new sound system in its 70-year-old house of worship on Franklin Road Southwest. When completed, the system will permit the homebound to more fully participate in worship. An access ramp and protection of stained-glass windows are part of the upgrading. |SPECIAL EVENTS| St. Francis House, an ecumenical ministry to the needy of the Roanoke Valley sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Richmond, will be open on Saturday mornings beginning in January. Eileen Stone, director, said volunteers are sought to distribute food and bag donated bread from 9 a.m. to noon. Call 345-9090 for more information. The center is at 824 Campbell Ave. S.W.

An open house at which the public can view recent improvements is planned Nov. 17 from 2-4 p.m. at the Presbyterian Community Center, 1228 Jamison Ave. S.E. The center, a partner in the new Southeast cooperative ministry of seven churches and service agencies, offers free food, clothing and emergency aid to eligible families and individuals. It is staffed by volunteers from many groups.

``Spiritual Conversations'' will be the theme of an Eckankar discussion Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. in the downtown Salem Public Library. Call 389-8043 for more information on the free lecture.
