IN SCHOOL NORTH

THE CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND recently received a superior rating in the Christiansburg Band Festival. The band's drill team, flag corps and baton twirler also received superior ratings. In the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association State Marching Festival in Pulaski, the band received a rating of excellent, and the auxiliary received a superior rating.

ALI CHITSAZ, MARK WEARY and LEILA KESSLER, students at Cave Spring High School, recently won third place in the Class AAA team division of the Radford University Math Rally.

Weary, son of Paul and Jinx Weary of Roanoke, also placed second in the individual Class AAA competition.

PATRICK HENRY HIGH SCHOOL announced the names of five students who have been named commended students in the 1997 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: Sarah S. Airey, Catherine B. Dalton, Annie T. Eure, Bryan R. Lewis and Alan P. Wagstaff.

Commended students placed in the top 5 percent of students taking the 1995 preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test.

PATRICK HENRY, WILLIAM FLEMING AND CAVE SPRING HIGH SCHOOLS recently had students recognized by the College Board. Gordon Lawson, Allison Suggs, Taharee Webb and Clark Williams, all of Patrick Henry High, received the AP Scholar with Honor Award for scoring a 3 or higher on four or more Advanced Placement exams, with an average score of at least 3.5.

Nathan Musselman of PH, Robert Herchenrider and Janelle Mitchell from Cave Spring, and Graham Field and Latasha Suggs from William Fleming received the AP Scholar award for earning a 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

Most colleges and universities grant college credit for a score of 3 or higher on AP exams.

FIRST UNION NATIONAL BANK OF VIRGINIA is opening "School Savings Banks" at Morningside and Monterey elementary schools. The students can make deposits to the banks, which will be staffed by third-, fourth- and fifth-graders.

The program is designed to teach children the values of saving and good work habits. The other Roanoke schools with savings banks are Crystal Spring Elementary and Huff Lane Micro Village.
