MAN SHOOTS ARROW AT OFFICER, POLICE SAY SUSPECT TO FACE ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE

A man shot an arrow at a Roanoke police officer late Wednesday at an apartment in Southwest Roanoke. The officer was not injured. Police arrested a 21-year-old man and charged him with attempted capital murder.

About 11:41 p.m., a dispatcher sent officers to an apartment in the 2600 block of Westover Avenue Southwest after they received an emergency call from that location. The nature of the call was not known.

Police said an officer saw a man inside the apartment holding a compound bow. The man shot an arrow in the direction of the officer, and it hit a door frame.

The man made threats and told police that he had been drinking, injecting turpentine and sniffing paint thinner.

Police said he also told them that he had set a booby trap for the first officer who entered the apartment.

The officers talked to the man and arrested him without incident at 12:34 a.m. Thursday. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for mental evaluation, police said.

Police are not going to serve the attempted capital murder warrant on the man until he is released from the hospital, so they would not release his name.
