American Electric Power Co. said Thursday it will provide energy-management services to some stores and other facilities of Sears, Roebuck and Co.
AEP said the contract represents a new line of business for the utility, traditionally a generator and distributor of electricity. A company spokeswoman said AEP is looking for opportunities to provide similar services to other businesses nationwide.
Under terms of the alliance, AEP early next year will design measures to improve the energy efficiency of the Sears store at Northland Mall in Columbus, Ohio. That store will become a model, or "technical learning center," for energy efficiency upgrades at other Sears sites, mostly in its Midwestern region.
That region includes parts of Virginia, but the company said no Virginia stores have yet been identified for inclusion in the program.
The studies will cover energy audits, lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling, budget forecasting, insulation and energy control systems.
