CAVS OPEN EXHIBITION SLATE WITH WIN

Sophomore Courtney Alexander came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points Friday night and lead Virginia to a 79-71 men's basketball exhibition victory over the Melbourne (Australia) Tigers.

Melbourne guard Andrew Gaze, a former Seton Hall star, had 35 to lead all scorers.

The Cavaliers, with a starting lineup of Harold Deane and Curtis Staples at guard, freshman Willie Dersch and Norman Nolan at forward and Chase Metheney at center, were outshot 52.3 percent to 43.3 percent. Melbourne also made 7 of 17 3-pointers.

Alexander made 10 of his 15 shots in a team-high 31 minutes. Jamal Robinson (15 points), Deane (14) and Staples (12) joined him in double figures. Robinson and Staples each had a team-high six rebounds.

In other sports news in the region:

* The Radford women's basketball team dropped an exhibition game to Slovakia 83-63 in Radford as forward Renata Horvathova scored a game-high 23 points. Center Nakia Bridges led the Highlanders with 16 points and Kim Cruise, a sophomore from Pulaski County High School, grabbed 12 rebounds.

* Fifth-seeded Washington and Lee and seventh-seeded Eastern Mennonite will play for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer title at 1 p.m. today at Roanoke College after upset victories Friday.

The Generals (12-5) upset top-seeded Roanoke 2-1 on two goals by sophomore forward Sam Chase. Sophomore back Kevin Goodwin scored for Roanoke (14-4). The loss ended the Maroons' 11-game win streak.

Eastern Mennonite (12-7) shut out Hampden-Sydney (10-8-1) 1-0 thanks to the goaltending of Jair Drooger and a goal by Tom Rice late in the second half.

* Top-seeded Rhode Island advanced to the Atlantic 10 men's soccer final with a 3-1 victory over Virginia Tech. Cory Turner fed Andre Gomez in the 70th minute of play for the lone goal for the Hokies (12-8).

nNorth Carolina defeated Virginia 5-2 in the semifinals of the ACC women's soccer tournament in Clemson, S.C. Jennifer Keefe and Lindsay Ritter scored for the Cavaliers (12-6-2).

* Radford men's soccer forward Kevin Kelly shared Big South Freshman of the Year honors, the league announced. Kelly, who was joined by UNC-Asheville's Joe Granack, led the Highlanders with nine goals and one assist this season.

Kelly's teammates Lee Morton, Richard Shepherd and Troy Washington all earned second team all-conference honors.

* Third-seeded Georgia Southern shut out sixth-seeded VMI 2-0 in the first round of the Southern Conference men's soccer championship in Greenville, S.C. The Keydets could not convert any of their 13 shots.

Meanwhile, VMI sophomore defender Kevin Dulhalme was named to the All-Southern Conference second team.

* Elizabeth Michinard scored the tying and winning goals as No.5 seed Radford beat No.4 seed William and Mary 3-2 in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association field hockey tournament at Foreman Field in Norfolk.

Michinard's game-winner came with 3:28 to play. The Highlanders, who face top seed Old Dominion at 2 p.m. today, had just four shots in the game.

PREPS Nogueira falls in Group AAA

At Falls Church, William Fleming's Flavia Nogueira, an exchange student from Brazil, lost 6-3, 6-3 to Laura James of Centreville in the first round of the Group AAA girls' tennis tournament in Falls Church.

Nogueira, the second Roanoke Valley District girls' tennis player to make the state tournament since 1979, finishes with a 13-2 record.

* The Virginia Independent Schools volleyball tournament will be completed today at North Cross with the third-seeded Raiders taking on sixth-ranked Paul VI at 10:30 a.m. in a quarterfinal.

Semifinals are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. A third place game will be played at 2 p.m. and the championship game is set for 3:30 p.m.

North Cross received a bye into the quarterfinals. In two 9:30 a.m. quarterfinals, top-seeded Grace Christian meets Bishop Ireton and Fredericksburg Christian plays Lynchburg Christian. The other 10:30 a.m. quarterfinal sends Collegiate against Holy Cross.

ETC. Junior golfers at The Homestead

Junior golfers representing 22 states and seven foreign countries tee it up in the first event on the 1996-97 International Junior Golf Tour today in The Homestead Resorts' Lower Cascades course in Hot Springs.
