A proposal to amend the University of Virginia's honor code has failed after two days of student balloting.
The measure called for changing the method by which student juries vote in trials of students accused of honor offenses. The university's 154-year-old system requires a student not to lie, cheat or steal under penalty of being expelled.
The change would have required student juries to vote first on whether an accused student intentionally had committed an offense. In a separate vote, the jury would have decided whether the act was serious enough to qualify as an honor offense. The juries currently vote once.
Of about 2,500 students who voted in the referendum last week, only about 1,650 voted to approve the change. The proposal required 10 percent of the student body, or about 1,800 votes, to pass.
