CLARK, Loyd Edward, 59, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, November 9, 1996 in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born November 29, 1936 in Bedford County a son of the late Moorman Loyd Clark and Della Whorley Clark. He is survived by two daughters, Christine O'Connell, Goode; Helen Faye Clark, Wirtz; a son, William Edward Clark, Wirtz; a sister, Lois Jean Chittum, Vinton; two brothers, Roger Clark, Glenn Clark both of Bedford; a grandson, Kevin O'Connell, Goode; a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996 from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford by the Rev. Wayne Murphy. Interment will follow in the Suck Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

COX, Georgia Witt, 75, of Altavista, passed away Friday, November 8, 1996. Graveside service 2 p.m. Monday, Tucker Family Cemetery. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home, Huddleston.

CRAWFORD, John Divers, 78, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 9, 1996. He is survived by his wife, Mary Walker Crawford of Roanoke; one nephew, Bobby E. Crawford of Boones Mill; one great-niece, Kelly Crawford Norville of Vinton; and one great-nephew, Christopher John Crawford of Boones Mill. He was a 1941 graduate of Concord College in Athens, W.Va. After graduation he served with the 106th Infantry Division in Europe during World War II and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Mr. Crawford taught school in the Roanoke County School System until his retirement. He was also a ham radio operator and a member of the Military Affiliate Radio System for over 40 years. He and his wife have been members of Fellowship Baptist Church since 1983. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 3 p.m Monday, November 11, 1996 with the Rev. Claude M. Dykes officiating. Interment will be with military honors at Fair View Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.

CUMBEE, Richard Lee, 60, of Cascade Drive, Pembroke, died Friday, November 8, 1996 in the ER at Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg. Born in Pembroke on August 17, 1938 he was a son of Edith Carter Cumbee of Pembroke and the late Charles Chapman Cumbee. Lee was devoted to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, having attended The Church of God in Pembroke for over 25 years. He also worked at National Gypsum Co. Gold Bond Plant for many years. Surviving are his mother; his wife, Bertie Sanders Cumbee; two sons, Richard W. Cumbee of Narrows and Dennis L. Cumbee of Trigg; two daughters, Gladys C. Hyatt of Narrows and Melissa C. McGrath of Pascagoula, Miss.; five grandchildren, Jason Midkiff, Crissy Midkiff, Melissa Cumbee, Christopher Cumbee, and Amanda Cumbee; five brothers, Ronnie Cumbee of Blacksburg, Winfred Cumbee of Rich Creek, Walter Cumbee of Blacksburg, Robert Cumbee of Pembroke and Frankie Cumbee of Blacksburg; five sisters, Frieda C. Sanders of Pembroke, Mary C. Kessinger of Rich Creek, Elizabeth C. Harless of Bland, Georgia C. Hughes of Pembroke and Anna Sue C. Collins of Pembroke. Funeral services will be condcuted 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996 with the Rev. James Walker and the Rev. Shahn Wilburn officiating. Burial will be in the Fillinger Cemetery at Pembroke. GOAD, Kermit Lee, 60, of Laurel Fork, passed away Saturday, November 9, 1996 in Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born May 5, 1936 in Carroll County, Va. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Goad; daugher and son-in-law, Robin and Steven Heidler of Greensboro, N.C.; son, Richard Goad of Hillsville; stepson and spouse, Michael and Sandra Edwards of Galax; brother, Swanson Goad of Hillsville; sisters and brothers-in-law, Vera and Barnett Guynn of Hillsville, Co ra Talent of Hillsville, Lula Mae and Foy Lewis of Hillsville, Freida and Wayne Martin of Hillsville; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren. HALE, Peyton Coley, 82, of Newport News, died of prostate cancer at home on Friday, November 8, 1996. Mr. Hale was a native of Wytheville and was a Peninsula resident for 55 years. He retired as a paint contractor in 1984. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific, France and Wales. Mr. Hale was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church in Richmond and was an honorary member of the Mens Friendship Class at Orcutt Baptist Church. Mr. Hale also was a member of Warwick Lodge #1711, Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. Hale is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Lee Trench Hale; two sons, William C. Hale Sr. of Gloucester and Robert P. Hale of Newport News; one daughter, Sue C. Hale Hayes of Gloucester; three sisters, Vivian Hale of Montpelier, Virginia Alley of Pulaski and Ruby Fanning of Wytheville; seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne T. Hale Turner, who died in 1985; four brothers, and four sisters. Mr. Hale leaves family and dear friends across the country. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Weymouth Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Weymouth Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Doyle and the Rev. Kenneth Trinckle, both of Orcutt Baptist Church. Moose rites will be performed by Warwick Lodge #1711. Interment will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. HALL, Nannie Kate Ratcliff, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, November 7, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew C. Hall. Survivors include four sons, Charles Edward Hall, Stewartsville, Danny Wayne Hall and wife, Pe ggy, Vinton, Richard A. Hall, Oakwood, Gary Lynn Hall and wife, Goldie; two daughters, Kathy Hall Caldwell and husband, Roy, Janet Faye Wimmer and husband, Mike, all of Roanoke; four grandchildren, Danny Wayne Hall Jr., Steven Ray Hall, Josiah Andrew Cook, Angela Kate Hall; great-grandson, Hunter Austin Hall; step-brothers, Harry Carter, Salem and Franklin Carter, Roanoke; one step-sister, May Lucas, Roanoke. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996, from Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The Rev. G. William Foster Jr. and Pastor Tom Poland will conduct services. HAMBLIN, Robert D., Sr., 65, of Belspring, died Saturday, November 9, 1996 in Carilion Radford Community Hospital. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was owner/operator of Midway Grocery on Belspring Road for 34 years. He was a member of the Belspring United Methodist Church, the Fairlawn Lions Club and the Virginia May Lodge #38 AF & AM. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Lillie Adkins Hamblin, Belspring; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert D. and Alice Hamblin, Jr., Belspring, Keith and Becky Hamblin, Belspring; a son, Dennis Hamblin, North Wilkesboro, N. C.; a brother, Clarence Hamblin, Dublin; a sister, Darlene Hamblin Argabright, Winston-Salem, N. C.; two beloved grandchildren, Alan Hamblin and Beth Hamblin, Belspring. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996 at the DeVilbiss Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest Chinault, the Rev. Will Shewey and the Rev. Lee Sarver officiating. HUFFMAN, Charles Irvin, 64, of Troutville, died at his home on Friday, November 8, 1996. He was retired from the United States Air Force in 1973, after having served for 20 years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam. He also was retired from Roche Bio-Medical Labs, after 16 years of service. Charlie was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his wife, Eula; sons, Michael Fadorick and wife Gail, and Christopher Huffman and very special friend Amanda Hoback; daughters, Linda Shelton and husband Terry, and Angela H. Hodges; granddaughters, Stephanie Secrist and Melissa Herron; grandson, Alan H. Fadorick; one great-grandson; his mother, Violet H. Huffman; brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy and Betty, Freddie and Carolyn, Jimmy and Barbara, and David and Brenda; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rozelle and Kenneth, Eleanor and Pete, JoAnn and Ike, Ruth and Morris, and Catherine, and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Emma Franklin. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 11, 1996, at the Rader Daleville Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Tuell of Christian Life Fellowship officiating. KIRBY, Rebecca Layne, 54, of Radford, passed away Thursday, November 7, 1996. She was a Special Service Officer at Kent Street Branch of Crestar Bank. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Elizabeth Jayne Kirby and Walter Allen Levy of Washington, D.C., Kathy and Chris Collins of Monroe, N.C., an d Melissa Anne Kirby of Atlanta, Ga.; her mother, Dot Layne of Radford; one granddaughter, Laura Elizabeth Levy; two sisters, Connie Layne Whalen of Alexandria and Dottie Rupe Layne of Raleigh, N.C., and one brother, John Robert Layne of Los Angeles, Calif. A PRIVATE family ceremony will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Carter Street United Methodist Church in Radford or the charity of your choice. LAWLESS, Frances Anne, 82, of Roanoke, died Friday, November 8, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Lawless. She was a retired public health and school nurse from Moline, Ill. Surviving are two sons, John M. Lawless, Phoenix, Ariz., Timothy J. Lawless, Moneta; one daughter, Judith Ann Hooven, Roanoke; six grandchildren, Shelley Lynne Hooven, Sarah Ann Hooven, De borah Hooven Irwin, John Robert Hooven, Emily Ann Lawless, Mary Catherine Lawless; one great-grandson, Miller Lawless Irwin; one sister, Cora Alice Johnson, Port Byron, Ill. Memorial services will be held at Oakey's South Chapel 2 p.m. Monday, November 11, 1996 with the Rev. Arthur Grant officiating. LOVING, Robert Marshall, Jr., (``Pete""), 75, of 203 Sycamore Bend Lane, Hot Springs, died Friday evening, November 8, 1996 at his residence. He was the husband of Bettie Harter Loving. Mr. Loving was born September 29, 1921 in Alleghany County a son of the late Robert Marshall Loving Sr. and Bernicie King Loving. He served as principal at Falling Spring Elementary School from 1949 until 1955 and again from 1970 until 1985. Mr. Loving served his country with the U.S. Air Corps from 1941 until 1945 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operations flying C-46 Cargo planes over occupied China to Burma also known as the Hump. Following his war service he continued his flying career with the Virginia Air National Guard in 1947 retiring in 1981. He is survived by two sons, Robert M. (Rob) Loving II of Clovis, Calif., Whitney Harter Loving of Portsmouth; one brother, James P. Loving Sr. of Covington; three sisters, Mrs. Edith Loving Leitch of Floyd, Mrs. Bernice Loving (Tootie) Gouchenour of Iron Gate, Mrs. Frances Loving Lawson of Ivy; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Loving Funeral Home, Covington with the Rev. Walter B. Failes Jr. officiating assisted by the Rev. Brent T. Williams. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Covington. OWENS, Willie Mae, 73, of Christiansburg, died Friday night, November 8, 1996, in Radford Community Hospital. She is survived by her husband, John H. Owens; two daughters, Betty Mae Owens and Mary Frances Keith of Christiansburg; grandchildren, Jody Scott Keith, and Kimberly and Todd Mills; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Alldredge of Salem, and Jean and John Walters of Buchanan, Tenn.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Bertie Richardson of Grottoes and Posey and Freda Richardson of Christiansburg, and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Albert and Ruby Owens of Ironto, Andy and Irma Owens of Bedford, Lola Mae Dove of Blacksburg and Maggie Parrish of Radford. SLUSHER, Ira Lee, 70, of Roanoke, loving husband and father, went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 8, 1996. He was retired from the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 20 years of service. Mr. Slusher was a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Faye Ruth Slusher Richards, and a son, Gary Wayne Slusher. Surviving are his loving wife of 53 years, Christine Gill Slusher of Roanoke; a son, Ronnie L. Slusher Sr., Roanoke; two sisters, Mary Orick, Roanoke, Geneva Smith, Bristol, Tenn.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. WILSON, Arlene Iris Campbell, 57, of Bedford, died Saturday, November 9, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in Rockbridge County on October 10, 1939, a daughter of the late John Franklin Campbell and Ila Agnes Camden Campbell. She was preceded in death by two sons, Forrest Wilson and Kent L ane Wilson Sr. She is survived by five sons, Brett L. Wilson, Randy W. Wilson and Kurt L. Wilson of Bedford, Ronald B. Wilson of Rocky Mount and Vance T. Wilson of Tucker, Ga.; two daughters, Diana S. Smith and Victoria K. Mayhew of Roanoke; one brother, Warren Campbell Kutz of Rockbridge County; one sister, June Goff of Big Island; 13 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, November 11, 1996, at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Griffith officiating. Arrangements by Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford.
