Wythe volunteers replant 40 trees
WYTHEVILLE - About 30 volunteers with the Wythe Conservation Group turned out this month for a morning of tree-planting around the Hedgefield Apartments property. They replanted some 40 trees from an area near the town's water tower, where they were becoming crowded, to the more open land around Hedgefield as an All Saints' Day project.
Program examines fight for minerals
EMORY - "Mineral Fights: Civil War Battles for Southwestern Virginia's Salt and Lead" will be the subject of a program at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Emory & Henry College's Wiley Hall Auditorium.
The speaker will be Robert C. Whisonant of Radford University and the Museum of the Middle Appalachians.
Whisonant will explore the region's geologic history leading to the formation of its salt and lead deposits, then move forward to the Civil War when North and South clashed over mineral operations in Saltville and in Wythe County at Austinville.

Health screenings for preschoolers
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Public Schools and the New River Valley Early Intervention Council are sponsoring a free health screening for preschoolers from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Center for Women's Health Education at the New River Valley Mall.
Children up to age 5 will have their vision, hearing, speech, development and health checked. For information, call 381-6175 or 381-6298.
Wytheville concert geared for families
WYTHEVILLE - Joyce Rouse, a former Grayson County resident, will bring a family music concert to Wytheville Community College at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Grayson Hall Commons.
Rouse is better known to music audiences as Earth Momma, and uses song styles from Dixieland and calypso to polka and the blues. Her first album was a finalist for a Nammy (Nashville Music Award) for Best Children's Recording.
She is a former Wytheville Community College student and board member who now lives in Nashville.
Recently she was a featured performer with the Nashville Entertainment Association's annual Extravaganza, opened Nashville's annual Italian Street Fair, and is featured in a new book, "The Soul of a Writer: Intimate Interviews with Successful Songwriters," by Susan Tucker.
Admission is two plastic or aluminum recyclable items.
