RADFORD MEN REACH FINAL IN BIG SOUTH

Kevin Terne's unassisted goal in the 53rd minute gave Radford a 1-0 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County on Saturday and a berth in the Big South Conference tournament championship game in Greensboro, N.C.

Sacha Drouin made seven saves for the Highlanders (10-9-1), who will meet the winner of Saturday night's semifinal between host North Carolina-Greensboro and Liberty. UMBC finishes with a 9-9-1 record.

Radford's victory was its first in the tournament since 1991 and sends the Highlanders to their first title-game appearance since 1988, when they won the crown.

In other soccer news in the region:

* Seventh-seeded Eastern Mennonite won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's tournament championship, defeating fifth-seeded Washington and Lee 3-1 at Roanoke College.

The lone goal for the Generals (12-6) came from Jamie Parker early in the second half and tied the score at 1. The Royals (13-7) broke the tie 15 minutes later and sealed the victory in the 74th minute of the second half.

* Unranked George Mason ended top-ranked Virginia's bid for an unbeaten season with a 3-0 victory in a non-conference men's game in Fairfax.

The Patriots (12-4-3) were outshot 9-6, but got two goals from Eduardo Lima and one from Vincent Marcotrigiano.

BASKETBALL VMI dominates exhibition

Six VMI players scored in double figures in a 113-88 victory over Sports Reach in an exhibition game in Lexington.

Bryan Taeug led the Keydets with 19 points, including six 3-pointers. Teammates Maurice Spencer and Brent Conley added 14 points each.

Delvin Bell scored 20 points and former Keydet Bobby Prince (Lord Botetourt High School) had five for Sports Reach.

* The Virginia Tech women's team plays an exhibition game against the Horizonts-Byelorussian team at 2 p.m. today at Cassell Coliseum. This is the first of two preseason games for the Hokies, who will take on Athletes in Action at home on Thursday.

ETC. W&L, Roanoke run in NCAA regionals

Washington and Lee and Roanoke College competed at the NCAA Division III Southeast Regional cross-country meet in Fredricksburg.

In the men's competition, W&L finished fifth and Roanoke was eighth as Frostburg (Md.) State won the title. Jason McNicholl of Roanoke qualified for the national championships, finishing fifth in a time of 26 minutes, 21 seconds. Jason Callen placed eighth for W&L.

In the women's competition, W&L finished sixth overall and Roanoke was 11th.

* Third-seeded Bridgewater avenged both of its conference losses en route to the ODAC volleyball championship, defeating Eastern Mennonite and Washington and Lee.

The Eagles (28-4) defeated the Generals 15-10, 15-10, 15-12 in the championship game. Bridgewater won its semifinal match with Eastern Mennonite 15-11, 15-8, 14-16, 15-8.
