MILLER, BASSETT BURN LAUREL PARK

With the Piedmont District tournament title on the line, Heather Miller turned up the heat on a cold Saturday night. Miller helped Bassett advance to the Region IV tournament with a 68-56 victory over Laurel Park at Magna Vista High School.

Miller scored 45 points, including 8-for-8 shooting from the free-throw line.

Bassett advances to play Grundy on Tuesday in Grundy. Laurel Park cut its deficit to five early in the fourth quarter, but could not pull any closer.

Brandy Martin scored 23 points for the Lancers.

In other district tournament championship games Saturday night:

Mountain Empire

Narrows 51, Galax 44: The Green Wave came away with a victory and the title against the Maroon Tide at Fort Chiswell High School, and both teams advanced to the Region C tournament.

Narrows was led by a balanced attack of Melissa Lucas with 14 points, Amanda Clemons and Tara Collins with 12 points each and Suzanne Webb with 11.

Erin Kyle scored 13 points for Galax and Tiffany Williams added 10.

Narrows will play host to Chilhowie on Tuesday and Galax travels to Parry McCluer on the same day.

Pioneer

Parry McCluer 58, Covington 45: The Fighting Blues continued their domination of the district this season with a victory over the Cougars.

Parry McCluer (17-6) went 9-1 in the district during the regular season. The Fighting Blues led by 13 at halftime, but Covington had trimmed the lead to eight through three quarters. Nicole Barger and Lindsey Coleman, both all-tournament selections, finished with 22 and 19 points, respectively, for the Fighting Blues.

Melissa Page and Joann Helton scored 13 points each for Covington. Page also made the all-tournament team.
