'Real Art Real Cheap' sale Dec. 3

The third annual ``Real Art Real Cheap'' sale, sponsored by The Arts Council of the Blue Ridge, will be held Dec. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Center in the Square, Roanoke.

Area artists will be selling their works at bargain basement prices. Partial proceeds will benefit the arts council.

Five artists - Vera Dickerson, Eric Fitzpatrick, Mimi Babe Harris, Peyton Klein and Marcia McDade - have each donated a piece of original work to be raffled at the sale for $1 per chance. Winners will be announced at the end of the evening.

'1619 Broadway' auditions at W&L

Auditions will be held at Washington and Lee University's Keller Theatre for a reading of a new show, ``1619 Broadway, The 1940s American Musical Revue,'' today from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 1 to 5:30 for individual roles. Auditions for ensembles will be held Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Genealogical society to meet

The Southwest Virginia Genealogical Society will meet Friday at 6 p.m. in the meeting room at the Hollins Branch Public Library, 6624 Peters Creek Road N.W., Roanoke.

The AGLL/Heritage Quest Magazine Road Show with Leland K. Meitzler, executive editor of Heritage Quest Magazine, will be featured.

Meitzler will present two talks, ``Armchair Genealogy'' and ``Scandals - Finding and Dealing with the Black Sheep.''

'Mennonite Journal' is topic of talk

The Bedford Geneaological Society will present ``A Mennonite Journal, 1862-1865, A Father's Account of the Civil War in the Shenandoah Valley'' on Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Bedford City-County Museum.

The journal is the story of Civil War home-front life recorded by Jacob R. Hildebrand, a Mennonite farmer. John R. Hildebrand, his great-grandson and editor of the book, will be the speaker.

Poetry reading in Lynchburg

Poet Libby Thayer will read from her work at the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center's ``Second Wednesdays'' Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in Gallery II.

Thayer is the author of ``Peripheral Visions.''

The reading is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring their lunch.

Handicapped parking planned for parade

Bedford Main Street has arranged parking for those with disabilities wanting to view the Annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Reserved spaces will be located behind First Union and beside Central Fidelity banks and require a special permit. Drivers must enter from Depot or Center streets.

Contact the Bedford Main Street office by Nov. 29 to obtain a permit. There is no charge.

The rain date for the parade is Dec. 8.

Memorial lights on Bedford tree

The deadline for purchasing lights on the Bedford community Christmas tree, in memory of those deceased or to honor living friends and relatives, is Nov. 22.

A ``light'' can be purchased for $1 at Peoples Furniture, 118 N. Bridge St., Bedford. Proceeds will be donated to the National D-Day Monument Foundation.

The list of names will be unveiled at the Community Tree Lighting Celebration on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. at Centertown Park, followed by a singalong, tree lighting and arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Conestoga lecture Thursday

Franklin A. Zirkle, an expert on the Conestoga wagon, will present a lecture, ``The Wagon Road,'' on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Shenandoah Division Conference Room, Virginia Museum of Transportation, Roanoke.

Zirkle, a Roanoke resident and retired real estate developer, will discuss the Great Wagon Road and share historical maps and slides of his discoveries.

His fascination with the wagon led him to Colonial Williamsburg where he found the Conestoga his family once owned.

Admission to the lecture, part of the 1996 Transportation Heritage Lecture Series presented by the museum's Resource Library and Archives, is $5. Reservations are requested by Tuesday.

Welfare reform is conversation topic

``Welfare Reform: Who Will Pick up the Slack?'' will be the topic of a community conversation Nov. 19 at 7 p.m. above Awakenings Cafe, 1402 Grandin Road S.W., Roanoke.

The speakers will include Corinne Gott, superintendent of the Social Services Department, and Michael Santorowski, program manager of the Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank.

The event is sponsored by the Plowshare Peace and Justice Center. It is free and open to the public.
