BULLARD, Gladie, of Raleigh, N.C., daughter of Charles E. Gladin and Mabel Branan Gladin, died Sunday, November 10, 1996. Gladie was born in Wilkerson County, Ga., on September 8, 1908. She graduated from Georgia State College in 1929 with a degree in chemistry. She was the wife of R. Paul Bullard, who preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters, June Bullard Winston of Charlotte, N.C., and Candy Bullard Nasser of Roanoke, Va.; two sons-in-law, Kenneth W. Winston Jr. and Raymond T. Nasser; seven grandchildren, Kenneth W. Winston III and his wife Sara Sinclair Winston, Paul B. Winston and his wife Marsha Hurst Winston, Lisa Winston Miller and her husband Thomas L. Miller, Margaret Winston MacFadyen and her husband Bret MacFadyen, Helen Winston Phifer and her husband Chip Phifer, Kathryn M. Nasser and Jeffrey S. Nasser, and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bullard taught science and chemistry in Fayetteville and New Bern, N.C. She was a research librarian for the North Carolina State Library Commission and was director of the Audio-Visual Department for the Raleigh Public Schools. She was a past president of the Woman's Club of Raleigh. The Natural History Society, which later became the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, was organized during her presidency. She was a former member of the Raleigh Garden Club. In 1969, she helped organize the Raleigh Boychoir, and also helped organize the Raleigh Cultural Center which became The Raleigh Arts Council. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the auditorium at Springmoor Retirem ent Center. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. in Montlawn Memorial Park. HARMAN, Yolanda Ricci, 72, of 5220 Roselawn Rd., S.W., Roanoke, died Sunday, November 10, 1996. She was born April 4, 1924, and was preceded in death by her husband, Kiah F. Harman; mother and father, James V. Ricci and Bom Bena Ricci. Mrs. Harman was a member of the Etta Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She retired from the Roanoke City Public Schools after 22 years of service and was a member of Grace Church in Roanoke. Surviving are her children, Ann F. Harman, Roanoke; James K. and Judith Martin Harman, Roanoke, Patricia L. Harman, Kalamazoo, Mich.; sisters, Elizabeth Powell, Kingsport, Tenn., Elena Muckenfuss, Welch, W.V., Julia Pennington, Charleston, W.V., Jean Blevins, St. Louis, Miss., Josephine O'Neall, Greenville, S.C.; and two grandchildren, John and Mary Beth Harman, Roanoke. HARRIS, John William Jr., 74, of Salem, passed away in a local hospital on Monday, November 11, 1996. He was the son of the late John William Ha rris Sr. and Bessie Mann Harris. He was retired from General Electric, Inc. of Salem, and was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Cave Spring, Roanoke. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gertrude W. Harris; two sons, CMSGT Jonathan T. Harris, (ret.) USAF, of Steilacoom, Wash., and Dr. E. Wayne (Carolyn M.) Harris, Superintendent of Roanoke City Schools. Also surviving are three grandsons, Dwayne A. Bowles, Roanoke, Anthony M. Harris, Washington, D.C., and Jeffrey T. Harris, Roanoke; special cousin, June (Robert) Raspberry, Columbus, Ohio. He gave special tender care to the oldest living relative in the Mann family, Mrs. Lula Mann. Other survivors are special nieces and nephews, devoted cousins and other relatives. HUDSON, George Harvey, 93, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 10, 1996. Born March 20, 1903, in Patrick Co., he was a son of the late Charles A. and Carrie Clark Hudson. Mr. Hudson was retired from the N&W Railway. He was a dedicated and active member of Melrose Baptist Church for 70 years. A longtime and active member of several fraternal organizations, he held membership in both the Melrose and Webber High Noon Masonic Lodges, Osceola Lodge of the Knights of Pythias, Mountain Dale Lodge of the IOOF, and the Dokies. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Clara Helm Hudson. Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Barbara and Herbert V. Ewell, eastern shore of Virginia; a son and his wife, Donald and Joyce Hudson, Elliston; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Walter Hudson, Roanoke; a sister, Lottie Camden, Wilson, N.C.; a special friend, Conduff Conner; several nieces and nephews. LOVERN, Pauline Collins, 67, of Christiansburg, died Saturday, November 9, 1996 at her daughter's home. She was born April 16, 1929 on Bent M untain in Floyd County to the late Thomas and Dollie Funk Collins. She is survived by her beloved companion, Robert Hypes; two sons, Earl Dean Lovern, Christiansburg and William Andrew Lovern, Hiwassee; three daughters and a son-in-law, Joyce Ratcliffe, Knoxville, TN, Patricia Shepard, Hiwassee and Aloma and Pastor Jim Shears, New Orleans, LA; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mavis DeWeese, Shawsville; a brother Dewey Collins, Lake Maurepas, LA; numerous nieces and nephews and two special friends, Alice McPeak, Christiansburg and Doug Simpkins, Hiwassee. MANNING, Alfred Lee Sr., 68, of Goldbond, died Sunday, November 10, 1996, at his home. Born in Vicker on December 31, 1927, he was a son of the late Monte C. and Eara A kers Manning. He was retired from Foote Mineral Co., Kimballton Plant, and attended the Pilgrim Holiness Rescue Mission at Goldbond. Surviving are his wife, Irene Lucas Manning; a son, Alfred Lee ``Jimmy'' Manning of Goldbond; two daughters, Teretha Mae Manning and Brenda Manning Williams, both of Goldbond; a grandson, Charlie Monroe ``C.J.'' NICHOLS, Bevie Martin, 95, of Bedford, and formerly of Moneta, passed away Sunday, November 10, 1996, in the Bedford County Mem orial Hospital. She was born January 29, 1901 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Millard Filmore Martin and Bessie Brown Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest James Nichols; and two sons, Mahlon P. Nichols and T. C. Nichols. She was a retired employee of Bedford County Memorial Hospital, and was a member of the Morgans Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Women's Missionary Group. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lorene Hicks, St. Petersburg, Fla., Helen and Glen Hicks, Moneta; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild. PALMER, Raymond, (Coolie), 70, a retired masonry contractor of Vinton, succumbed from a chronic pulmonary disease at Community Hospital Sunday, November 10, 1996. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther and Audrey Palmer and two brothers, Clinton and George Palmer. He is survived by Jean Cyphers Palmer, his wife of forty-six years; four daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Green, Hardy, Leigh and Jerry Jones, Tenita and Larry Pickeral, all of Vinton, Ginger and Bob Ross, Moneta; and four grandchildren, C.D. Green, Whitney and Jeremy Jones, and R.C. Ross; his faithful pets are Mutt of Mo. and Duke of Vinton. Surviving sisters and brothers are, Learleen Obenchain, Salem, Owen Palmer, Moneta, Eugene Palmer, Charolettesville, Madie Alls, Salem, Marie Horton, Roanoke, O.D. PUTNEY, William Kemper, 90, of Big Island, died Sunday, November 10, 1996 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth Burch Putney. Born in Big Island, February 10, 1906 he was a son of the late George Kemper and Nannie Cobb Putney. He was a retired supervisor from the C & O Railroad with over 40 years service, a former member of the Bedford County Board of Supervisors, a member of Waddell Lodge #228 AF & AM, Gordonsville, Va., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of the Kazim Shrine Temple, and a member of Big Island Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Irvin T. Putney and two brothers, Duke A. Putney and John I. Putney. In addition to his wife, Mr. Putney is survived by four sons, William K. Putney Jr. of Martinsville, Lacey E. Putney and wife, Elizabeth of Forest, Pual P. Putney and wife, Glenna of Big Island and Macon C. Putney and wife, Janet of Bedford; one daughter-in-law, Kay P. Gantt of Summerland Key, Fla.; one brother, Ellis H. Putney of Richmond; two stepdaughters, Martha B. Dawson and husband, Gordon B. Jr. of Big Island, Amber B. Pokropski and husband, Edward of Baltimore, Md.; 13 grandchildren; ten great-granchildren; and four stepgrandchildren. QUESENBERRY, Herbert Hoover, 68, of 308 Richardson Dr., Collinsville, died Monday, November 11, 1996 in Memorial Hospital of Martinsville & Henry Co. Mr. Quesenberry was born October 6, 1928 in Max Creek, Va. to the late William Preston Quesenberry and the late Essie Jane Owens Quesenberry. He was a retired employee of E. I. DuPont, where he worked in management for 28 years. He was an Army WWII veteran and a member of Fort Trial Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities, including Sunday School teacher and Chairman of Deacons. He also served as a layman in several churches in Henry and surrounding counties. He was a graduate of Draper High School/Certified Electrician. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Emmet Quesenberry, Early Quesenberry and W. Guy Quesenberry and two sisters, Edith Wilson and Dorothy Kirkner.
