Garcia, a senior who played for George Washington-Danville as a transfer student from his native Spain, has hit 16 of 20 field-goal attempts and all 31 of his extra-point tries for 24th-ranked UVa.

The other finalists are Peter Holt (San Diego State), Marty Kent (Louisiana Tech), Marc Primanti (North Carolina State) and Damon Shea (Nevada). The winner will be announced Dec.4.

BASKETBALL GW, St. Joe's favored

George Washington and St.Joseph's are the coaches' choices to win their respective divisions in Atlantic 10 Conference women's basketball this season. Virginia Tech was projected to finish third behind GW and La Salle in the West.

The Hokies were followed by Duquesne, Xavier and Dayton in their division. In the East, St.Joe's was followed by Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Temple, St.Bonaventure and Fordham.

Tech did not have a player on the preseason first-, second- or third-team All-Atlantic 10 squads, but freshman center Kim Seaver was one of six Rookies of Influence.

* The Virginia men's and women's basketball teams play an exhibition doubleheader tonight at University Hall. The UVa women take on the Victorian All-Stars from Australia at 6, and the Cavalier men take on Court Authority at approximately 8 p.m.
