Ernie Duncan, a 5-foot-10 point guard from Cincinnati, has given an oral commitment to Radford University and will join seven Hargrave Military Academy basketball teammates in signing letters of intent today.
Duncan, who played at Providence High School in Cincinnati, was one of 112 players who came to Hargrave for tryouts between March and May.
``We don't have any walk-ons,'' said Scott Shepherd, who coaches the postgraduate program at Hargrave. ``Our team is hand-picked.''
Duncan is the back-up to starting point guard Mike Williams, who has signed with Old Dominion, and is expected to play 15 to 20 minutes a game.
Duncan is ``a good defender,'' Shepherd said. ``He's very quick, he controls the offense; he's just your prototype point guard. He's not concerned about scoring.''
Shepherd said Radford, Dayton and Capitol University, a Division III program in Columbus, Ohio, recruited Duncan out of high school. However, Radford was the only school he visited officially this fall.
Hargrave forward Rolan Roberts, who signed with Virginia Tech last year but did not meet NCAA eligibility guidelines, will sign with the Hokies again today. N.C. State will sign a pair of Hargrave players, 6-8 Kenny Inge and 6-6 Ron Anderson.
Shepherd said he expected 12 of Hargrave's 13 postgraduate players to sign with Division I programs.
In other recruiting, North Carolina expects to sign 6-10 Brian Bersticker from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach. Bersticker picked the Tar Heels over Kentucky and Georgia Tech.
California big man Chris Burgess has not committed to Duke, as previously reported.
