Roanoke Times survey coming up

The Roanoke Times next week will mail questionnaires to Roanoke-area companies soliciting information for its annual survey of business and economic conditions and the outlook for 1997. The survey, consisting of a dozen questions, is the basis of a report to be published Jan. 5.

About 250 companies are scheduled to receive the questionnaire, but the survey is open to any business willing to participate. Companies that have not participated before but are interested in being included this year are asked to contact business editor John Levin by Nov. 15 at 981-3345 or (800) 346-1234, extension 345.

Briefly

* Westinghouse Electric Corp. has scheduled a news conference this afternoon amid widespread expectations it will split into two companies, industrial and broadcast media, with separate stocks.

* America Online Inc. handed out termination notices Tuesday to about 300 employees, two-thirds of them in Northern Virginia, as part of a restructuring announced in late October. Although most of the cuts were at AOL's headquarters in Dulles, the company also said it was closing offices in Berkeley, Calif., and Vero Beach, Fla., and had cut a few jobs in other offices around the country.
