BANKS, Edith, 86, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, November 10, 1996. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law Aubrey (Delores) Freeman of Roanoke, one daughter, Mayola Lewis of Catawba; a devoted sister-in law, Edith Miller. BARLOW, Corene Hale, 70, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, November 9, 1996 at a local hospital. Survivors include your mother, Gertrude B. Lewis, Catawba; one daughter, Ernestine Smith; two grand children, Earle L. Smith Jr. and Apryle R. Smith; one great-grandchild, Jordon W. Smith, all of Roanoke. Ms. Barlow was a faithful member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she sang in the Magic Stars Gospel Chorus of Jerusalem. BIRMINGHAM, Mary Ann, 85 of Roanoke died November 11, 1996. She was the widow of Michael G. Birmingham, retired Chief of Staff of The New York City Police Department. Mrs. Birmingham was a volunteer in many local organizations including RAM, LOA, The Free Clinic, and the VA. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Teresa Birmingham of Roanoke; grandchildren, Crista, John, and Tayza. A Funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Churc h, 10 a.m. Thursday with the Reverend Kenneth Stofft officiating. BOLT, Helen Fink, 76, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996. She was a member of Hollins Road Church of the Brethren and also worked for Yale and Town Lock Company for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walker W. Bolt. Survivors include a daughter, Linda L. COX, Walter Golden, Sr., (``Soda""), 87, of 1212 Newbern Road, Pulaski, died Tuesday morning, November 12, 1996 at his home. He was born in Wythe County on September 1, 1909 and was the son of the late Biddle and Delia Cregger Cox. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Wirt Cox, a son, Walter G. Cox, Jr. and a daughter, Mary Cox Kanode, three brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Jordan's Chapel United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Men, Moose Lodge #394, Wytheville, and the Thornspring Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Frances Snider Cox, Pulaski; four daughters, Ima Wallace, Pulaski, Mrs. Graham (Jennie) Simmerman, Radford, Mrs. Clifford (Tar) Shelor, Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Mrs. Dennis (Nancy) Martin, Radford; one son and daughter-in-law, A. EPPERLEY, Major Hensel, 72, of Dublin, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 1996, in a Farmville nursing facility. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Marion and Effie Trail Epperley; stepmother, Mary Lane Epperley; and a brother, Randolph Epperley. Survivors include his wife, Mary Woodrum Epperley; one daughter, Mrs. Ella Jane Handy of Dublin; one granddaughter, Sarah Jane Long; one grandson, Phillip Randolph Long; one stepgranddaughter, Ida Denise Akers; three great-grandchildren, Phillip Dakota Long, Cody Austin Akers, and Tiara Nicole Handy; one half sister, Katherine Morris of Dublin; one niece, Kathy Warden. GLICK, David Lawrence, Jr., 52, of Lexington, died Monday, November 11, 1996, at his residence. Born in Virginia on May 6, 1944, he was the son of David Lawrence Glick Sr. and Patsy J. Armentrout Glick of Lexington. Mr. Glick was a member of Oxford Presbyterian Church, and a rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Surviving besides his parents are his wife, Katherine Hust Glick, Lexington; daughter, Gretchen Lee Glick, Lexington; son, David Lawrence Glick III, Lexington; sister, Patricia G. Aldred, Lexington; sister and brother-in-law, Betty G. and Mark Jones, Lexington; brother-in-law, James Hust, Culpeper. He is also survived by four faithful pets, Emma, Edie, Squeekie, and Scooter. A memorial service will be conducted Friday, November 15, 1996, at 4 p.m. at the Oxford Presbyterian Church with Dr. James E. Guthrie officiating. HARRIS, John William, Jr., 74, of Salem, passed away in a local hospital on Monday, November 11, 1996. He was the son of the late John William Harris Sr. and Bessie Mann Harris. He was retired from General Electric, Inc. of Salem, and was a member of Bethel A.M.E. Church, Cave Spring, Roanoke. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Gertrude W. Harris; two sons, CMSGT Jonathan T. Harris, (ret.) USAF, of Steilacoom, Wash., and Dr. E. Wayne (Carolyn M.) Harris, Superintendent of Roanoke City Schools. Also surviving are three grandsons, Dwayne A. Bowles, Roanoke, Anthony M. Harris, Washington, D.C., and Jeffrey T. Harris, Roanoke; special cousin, June (Robert) Raspberry, Columbus, Ohio. He gave special tender care to the oldest living relative in the Mann family, Mrs. Lula Mann. Other survivors are special nieces and nephews, devoted cousins and other relatives. HATCHER, Cour tney Valentine, Jr., 66, of Bedford, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was born in Bedford County on December 28, 1929, a son of the late Courtney Valentine Hatcher, Sr. and Frances Elizabeth Cofer Hatcher. He was a retired rural mail carrier and employee of Peaks of Otter Corporation and was owner and operator of Peaks County Tree Farm. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of Peaks Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife, Elsie Graham Hatcher; two sons, Robyn C. Hatcher, Lynchburg and Mark W. Hatcher, Bedford; a brother, John L. Hatcher, Bedford; a sister, Helen H. Norris, Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, Todd Hatcher, Cody Hatcher, both of Lynchburg, John Hatcher, Orry Hatcher, both of Bedford. NIBLOCK, Henry L., 90, a recent resident at Brandon Oaks retirement facility in Roanoke, died Monday, November 11, 1996, in Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. after a lengthy illness. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. G. C. (Rebecca) Simerson of Salisbury, N.C. and Mrs. Charles W. (Sarah) Sanders of Ashland; three brothers, Roger C. George G. and Kenneth C., all of Statesville, N.C.; 14 nephews; and nine nieces. Mr. Niblock, a native of North Carolina, came to Roanoke in 1938 from Greensboro, N.C., where he had been employed with an automobile dealership during which time he met and married Agnes Stewart, a school teacher who died in 1995. He came to Roanoke as an employee of Antrim Motors, Inc., the local Dodge dealership, where he was employed for 38 years, first as Office Manager, then General Manager, and the final eight years before retirement in 1976, as President and CEO. During his years with Antrim's he served several terms on the Regional Dodge Dealer Council in Washington, D.C., also several terms on the Board of Directors of The Automobile Trade Association of Virginia, and on the Board of Directors of The Roanoke Chamber of Commerce. After retirement he worked for eleven years as a volunteer/counselor for the Small Business Administration in the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE). He was a long-time member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the Shenandoah Club. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, where he served several terms as deacon and several terms as elder. TAMENNE, Harry Louis, 73, of Roanoke died, Sunday, November 10, 1996. Born in Pt. Marion, Pa., he was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Andree Tamenne and is survived by his wife Janis Knutzen Tamenne of Roanoke; a son, Kurt and wife Kathalan and grandson, Joel, a son, Barth and wife, Carol and grandson, Aaron, a stepson, Todd Knutzen and family. A brother, Roger and family and a sister Suzanne Kroner and family. Mr. Tamenne served in World War II as a fighter pilot for the U.S.A.F. in the European Sector. TOMPKINS, James Lucas, (``Luke""), 94, of Hillsville, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996, at his home. He was born in Hillsville on February 16, 1902, and was the son of the late William Daniel Tompkins, Attorney, and Sally Kincannon Green. He was the fourth generation in the practice of law, which he studied in his father's law office. He graduated at Fork Union Military Academy, then studied at the College of William and Mary, and attended the University of Virginia School of Law in 1931. He was a member of Thomas Jefferson Society of Alumnae and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a member of the Virginia State Bar for over 60 years, having passed the bar in 1924. In 1938, he was elected the first Elder of Hillsville Presbyterian Church. He served on the Board and as President of The First Carroll County Bank in 1938, which is now NationsBank. He was a charter member of the Rotary Club and vice president of the Virginia Bar Association. He believed massive resistance to segregation was illegal in the state of Virginia. He served two terms as President of the Carroll County Democratic Party. He retired from the practice of law in 1982 after 58 years. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mildred Perkins Tompkins; a son, Judge James Lucas Tompkins III of Hillsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Rosamond and John H. Foote of Manassas; four grandsons, J. L. Tompkins, John Daniel Tompkins, Nathaniel T. Foote and Samuel Foote; a sister, Mrs. Ellen Apperson of Richmond; three nieces, Miss Sara Apperson and Mrs . Elizabeth Apperson Ramsey of Richmond and Mrs. Katheryn Holder of Keysville; two nephews, the Rev. Thomas W. Apperson of Lewisburg, W.Va., and Attorney Edward Early of Charlotte Court House, and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. TURPIN, Tommy McClung, Sr., 55, of Lexington, died Monday, November 11, 1996, at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. Born November 10, 1941, in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late John Thurman Turpin Sr. and Minnie Saville Turpin. Mr. Turpin was a member and deacon of Oxford Presbyterian Church, past member of Effinger Ruritan Club, present member of Farm Bureau, and was an equipment operator for the Virginia Dept. of Transportation since 1980. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Turpin and J. T. Turpin. Surviving are his wife, Karen Vanness Turpin, Lexington; two sons, Tommy McClung Turpin Jr., Lexington, John Norman Turpin, Lexington; three sisters, Nancy Turpin Dunlap, Glasgow, Vinda Turpin Bryant, Charlottesville, Mary Lee Wood, Lexington; several nieces and nephews.
