AYERS, Claudie Rodgers, 95, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, November 13, 1996. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. Mrs. Ayers was the widow of Willie S. Ayers and was preceded in death by a son, William Phillip Ayers. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Madeline A. and Heyward R. Parker, Roanoke; three grandchildren, Stephen H. Parker, Tracy P. Parker and Shari Lynn Waldeck, all of Roanoke; four great-grandsons; and a sister, Mrs. Willie R. Moore, Akron, Ohio. BARNARD, Vernon Wayne, 43, of Route 1, Goodview, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996, in Virginia Veterans Care Center. He was the husband of Jeanette Shinault Barnard. Born July 11, 1953 in Altavista, he was a son of Louis C. and Thelma Hogan Barnard of Altavista. He was a graduate of Altavista High School and Virginia Tech as a History major. He attended Clearbrook Baptist Church in Roanoke, was a fireman with the Roanoke City Fire Department, and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Some of his favorite hobbies included the love of all sports and participation in Civil War re-enactment. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one son, Cole Alexander Barnard of Goodview; one daughter, Jessica Lynn Barnard of Goodview; one brother, Jerry Barnard of Hurt; and two sisters, Judy H. Dillon of Palm Coast, Fla., and Cecelia Wiley of Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, November 15, 1996, by Lory Brafford in the Altavista Church of Christ, Avondale Drive. BOONE, James Charles, (""Chuck""), 39 of Pulaski, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996 at his home. A loving and caring husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jo Boone, Pulaski; one daughter, Jennifer Louise Ferris, Pulaski; one son, James Michael Boone, Pulaski; his mother, Shirley Boone, Elliston; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel Boone, Ray Boone, Sam and Wanda Boone, all of Elliston, Robert and Sherry Boone, Christiansburg; one sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Jimmy Collins, Elliston. He was preceded in death by his father Quentin Boone. He was a member of the North Star Masonic Lodge #168 in Wichita, Kansas and was the member of the Congregational Holiness Church, Shawsville. BREEDEN, Dosie David, 61, of Natural Bridge Station, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996, at the University of Virginia Medical Center. He was born March 10, 1935 in Rockbridge County, son of the late Jeff D. Breeden and Mary Moore Breeden. Mr. Breeden was self-emplo yed in the timber business. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Jason Breeden; and a sister, Pearl Staton. CALDWELL, Nedra Showalter, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday November 12, 1996. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward B. Caldwell; parents, Rev. and Mrs. Albert Showalter; one brother, Milton E. Showalter; one sister, Orpha S. Fallwell. She is survived by one brother, Homer L. Showalter and wife, Frances; one sister, Betty S. Ronk and husband, Galen; one sister-in-law, June N. Showalter; six nieces and nephews, Ronald Fallwell, Dale Crisp, Gary Ronk, Rhonda Dugan, Alan Ronk and Gerald Showalter; nine great-nieces and nephews. She was a faithful member of Masons Cove Church of the Brethren and was retired from the General Electric Company. She spent her entire retirement as a caregiver to her family. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion, and was a graduate of Emory and Henry College. She was the daughter of the late Rev. S. N. and Mae Garst Eblen. She is survived by two sisters, Ruby E. Hollingsworth of Cambridge, Minn. and Joyce E. Cornette of Marion; one brother, J. Paul Eblen of Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Thelma B. FETZER, Helen I., 68, of Old Towne Manor Apts., Cumberland, Md., died Tuesday, November 12, 1996, at Sacred Heart Hospital. Born March 9, 1928 in Paw Paw, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Theodore D. Cowgill and Josephine I. Ropson Cowgill, Cumberland. Mrs. Fetzer was a retired nursing assistant at the Cumberland Nursing Home. She was a member of the First Church of God. In addition to her mother, surviving are her husband, Harry T. Fetzer; two daughters, Sandra D. Shank and husband, Alan, Cumberland, Pamela A. Thurlow and husband, Mark, Christiansburg; one granddaughter, Melissa Shank, McLean; three grandsons, Michael Shank, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Eric and Brent Thurlow, both of Christiansburg; one brother, George W. KEISTER, Harmon Noblin, 79, of 613 Laurel Wood Apts., Pulaski, died Wednesday, November 13, 1996, in Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. Born in Pulaski County January 6, 1917, he was the son of the late Miles E. Ke ister and Nannie Brooks Keister. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Vann Keister. He retired from Rainbow Bread after 36 years, and 14 years with Pulaski Drugs. He was a veteran of the Navy, World War II. He is survived by one son, Ronald E. Keister, Manassas; two sisters, Mrs. Eugene ``Mildred'' Chumbley, Pulaski, Mrs. Pauline Riggle, Staunton; two granddaughters, Amy E. and Kelly B. PATTERSON, Edward Leon Jr., (``Bona''), 40, of 4000-A Belleview Drive, Bedford, died Tuesday, November 12, 1996, at Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bedford on September 23, 1956, a son of the late Edward Leon Patterson Sr. and Yvonne Evans Patterson. He was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. Bona was a youth counselor and field supervisor for the Bedford City Recreation Department for over 20 years, and was employed by Bedford County Public Schools as a teacher's aide. He is survived by two sisters, Yvonne D. Patterson and Ava D. Patterson, both of Bedford; a brother, Xavier E. Patterson, Bedford; foster brother, David Barlow, Bedford; devoted and loving friend, Cathy Barlow of Bedford; two aunts, Blanche Spinner, Bedford, Annabelle Scott, Washington, D.C.; goddaughter, Monique Bryant. THARP, Glenn W., 84, of 1504 High Acre Road, Bedford, died Wednesday, November 13, 1996 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia on November 29,1911, a son of the late Rev. Cammie Dixon Tharp and Grace Morrison Tharp. He was Chairman of the Board of Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Inc. and a life-long Funeral Director. A 1933 graduate of Cincinnati College of Embalming, he became associated with M. P. Carder, Co., now Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, in 1934. For over 62 years he unselfishly devoted his energies to serving the citizens of the Bedford community. Without hesitation, he gave of himself while striving for the betterment of his organization. He was a man of quick wit, a sharp memory and a keen devotion to details. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the Virginia and National Funeral Directors Associations and was awarded the Virginia Funeral Directors Golden License Award in 1984. He is one of the two surviving Charter Members of the Bedford Lions Club that was founded in July, 1935, President of the Bedford Rotary Club in 1966, a founding member of the Blue Ridge Funeral Directors Association and a member of the Peaks of Otter Chapter #2157 of the VFW. While serving under General George C. Patton during World War II, he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. A combat veteran, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart for gallantry in action and wounds received in Zerkenback, Germany on April 1, 1945. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sadie Jane Walker Tharp; a son, W. D. ``Skip"" Tharp and his wife Kathy Terrell Tharp of Bedford; a grandson, Christopher Freeman Tharp of Richmond and his special friend, Sara Glass of Charlottesville; a brother, James B. Tharp of Arlington and a half brother, J. Scott Tharp of Barrackville, W. Va.; two sisters, Thelma T. Wolfe of Buchannon, W. Va. and Frances Everson of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; a half sister, Elaine T. Veltri of Enterprise, W. Va. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, November 16,1996 at 11 a.m. at Main Street United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass, Jr. officiating, assisted by Father James J. Begley. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. THOMPSON, Anna Theresa, 91, of Salem, died Wednesday, November 13, 1996. WIMMER, Mary Lucille Oliver, 97, of Kingsport, Tenn., died Wednesday, November 13, 1996 at Church Hill Health Care and Rehabilitation Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Roanoke, Va. and former member of the Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, Mrs. Wimmer has lived in Kingsport since 1928. She was an active member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church, Church Circle and participated in many phases of the Kingsport community life. Her life revolved around her family, both in Kingsport and in Roanoke and around her many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Watson Wimmer, her parents, W. E. and Lucy Oliver, a sister, Doris Oliver Draper and two brothers-in-law, Asa Draper and Walter Urquahart. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Sybil Wimmer Riley and John Riley of Kingsport, TN; a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. William O. Wimmer and Nancy Wimmer of Oakdale; a sister, Millicent Oliver Urquahart of Roanoke; and a sister-in-law, Edna Wimmer Siewers of Pittsburgh, PA; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
