A BRIDGE IN PROGRESS

LENGTH: Short : 26 lines
ILLUSTRATION: PHOTO: NHAT MEYER/Staff. Structural beams for a bridge that

connects new road construction on U.S. 11/460 near Elliston were

installed Thursday. The one-mile, $1.8 million project started in

the spring, and is about 70 percent complete, according to Virginia

Department of Transportation Engineer Russell Whitworth. The

two-lane, east-bound stretch will replace a one-lane section that

goes over a narrow bridge and passes in front of Elliston-Lafayette

Elementary School. Whitworth said VDOT planned to demolish the old

bridge, but Montgomery County may take over responsibility and use

it for foot travel. The elementary school might have benefited the

most from all this construction. Russell said they needed more land

fill for the road, so they leveled a hill behind the school. VDOT

will eventually pave that area for a walking track and playground.
