At conventions, a little fun usually isn't off limits. It's a time to catch up with colleagues, enjoy the food, maybe go shopping. The primary thing convention-goers generally don't do is work.
Not so at this year's session of the Virginia Counselors Association. Today, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., the counselors will staff the phones. You can speak to an academic counselor by calling (800)953-4334.
The counselors have volunteered to give career information - just the sort of thing they do in their jobs at high schools and colleges - during part of a four-day annual meeting of the 3,000-person association at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center.
They'll have apprenticeship guides, course catalogs and a database with them. Walk-ins won't be allowed, however.
The counselors are offering the outlook and salaries for many occupations, suggested sources of school financial aid, and details about apprenticeship programs, college curricula and opportunities in the military.
"We have a mini career center set up in the Hotel Roanoke," said coordinator Carl McDaniels, a professor at Virginia Tech. "This is the Virginia Counselors Association serving the citizens of Virginia."
Those who are unable to reach today's special hot line may call another career information line, operated six days a week by Virginia Tech, at (800)542-5870, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
