COLLEGE COUNCIL LIKES TECH TENURE TACK

Virginia Tech won praise this week for its annual restructuring plan update, which included a new tenure review policy. The State Council of Higher Education did make one suggestion, however, said spokesman Mike McDowell. Four colleges, including Tech, might want to consider setting up a timetable for dismissal of faculty with a history of unsatisfactory performance, he said.

The other schools are the University of Virginia, Virginia Military Institute and George Mason University. Tech's policy handles such incidents on a case-by-case basis, McDowell said.

State colleges and universities have spent the past year setting up post-tenure review policies. Tenure, which ensures academic freedom and often a job, is awarded to professors after they undergo lengthy academic scrutiny.
