Francis West, a Salem native and former mayor of Martinsville, has given the College of William & Mary $1 million.
The money will endow a professorship in economics to be named in West's honor, and it will "invigorate" the school's economics program, which is the oldest in the country, William and Mary President Timothy Sullivan announced Friday.
The gift will generate income that will be matched by the state's scholars program.
In 1991, West established a similar professorship at Roanoke College, a school he attended.
West is retired president of West Window Corp. of Martinsville. He is a member of the William and Mary Board of Visitors, and is a former chairman of the Board of Community Colleges.
