She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Samuel Tilden Barger; two brothers, Jack Thornton Griffin and Irvin Davidson Griffin; a sister, Ethel Louise Griffin Asher; two half sisters, Hallie Griffin Chase and Cora Griffin Merriken. She was a member of the Liberty Chapter #109, Order of the Eastern Star and because of her love of music, the Bedford Choral Society. Myrtle was a deeply Christian woman who trusted in the Lord and put her Christian principles in practice every day. Her daily life was rooted in hope, optimism, a sense of humor and a desire to share her wisdom with others. She graciously adjusted to drastic changes in her life with the knowledge that each day was a gift from the Lord and must be used wisely. She loved her home and took great pride in her flower gardens and family genealogy. An artist, she had the talent to paint simple watercolors or complex oil paintings. A writer also, she had the unique ability to beautifully express her feelings through poetry. She was not discouraged about the aging process; on the contrary, she was grateful for lessons learned, wisdom gleaned and the ability to share that with others in need. She faced life's sunset with little complaint because she believed that would be a waste of time and worrying doesn't pay. She moved more slowly in her senior years but was thankful for every day. She leaves no regrets. She is survived by her brother, Frank R. Griffin and her sister, Lydia E. Griffin both of Bedford; two nephews, William H. Merriken and his wife, Betty of Bedford and Eugene McVeigh Asher and his wife, Reba of Brookneal; four great-nieces, Patricia Louise (Patti) Merriken, Janet Lynn Merriken Roberts and her husband, Bob, Amy Jo Merriken Miller and her husband, Mike, Katherine (Kitty) Chase Merriken Giles and her husband, Steve; also six great-nieces and nephews.
