MD. UPSETS VIRGINIA IN ACC SOCCER

Tournament MVP Pierre Venditti had a goal and an assist as Maryland stunned top-seeded Virginia 2-0 on Sunday in the ACC men's soccer final in Charlottesville.

After a scoreless first half, Venditti beat UVa goalie Yuri Sagatov high to the near post with a 15-yard blast from the right in the 56th minute. Shane Dougherty converted the rebound of Venditti's shot with five minutes remaining to seal the victory for the Terrapins (13-5-3).

Russell Payne made five saves to record the shutout for Maryland.

The Cavaliers (17-2-3) saw their home-field unbeaten streak end at 34 games.

In other news in the region:

* Top-ranked North Carolina took a two-goal lead early in the second half, then held on for a 2-1 victory over Virginia in an NCAA Division I field hockey tournament game in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Susannah Schott and Cindy Werley scored the goals for the Tar Heels (21-1), who will meet Northeastern in a semifinal Nov.23 in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Heather Hale scored for UVa (18-5).
