'Videotopia' exhibit at mall

``Videotopia,'' a new exhibit sponsored by the Science Museum of Western Virginia, is now on display at the former Brendle's location in Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke.

The exhibit traces the 25-year history of video arcade games and the technological improvements they employ.

The 6,000-square-foot exhibit includes a display of the computer hardware used to generate the games, the games themselves in an arcade format, including such old favorites as ``Pac Man'' and ``Tempest,'' and a historical perspective of each game as it was introduced.

The $2 admission fee includes four game tokens. Additional tokens are available at a cost of four for a dollar.

The exhibit will be on display at least through Dec. 31 and is open Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. It will closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Call 342-5710.

Nov. 22 lecture in Lynchburg

Vincent Scully, Sterling Professor Emeritus of the History at Art at Yale University, will present ``The Architecture of Community'' on Nov. 22 at 4 p.m. in Thoresen Theatre at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg.

Scully wrote numerous books throughout his 48-year teaching career at Yale and was twice named to Time magazine's list of the ``Ten Outstanding American College Teachers.'' He was chosen to deliver the 24th Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the highest honor bestowed by the government for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.

Cincinnati lecture Thursday at VMI

Karen O. Kupperman, New York University professor of history, will present, ``The New History of America's Founding Period,'' as the annual Society of the Cincinnati Lecture on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Virginia Military Institute's Jackson Hall, Lexington. There event is free. Call (540) 464-7207.

Poet to read tonight at RU

Poet Janet Sylvester will read from her work tonight at 7 in Radford University's Heth Hall Lounge A.

Sylvester's latest poetry collection will be published by W.W. Norton in the spring. An English department faculty member at Radford, she has won an Academy of American Poets Prize, the Grolier Poetry Prize and a PEN Discovery Award. The event is free. Call 831-5324.

Volunteers needed for Nov. 23 race

Sixty to 80 volunteers are needed to help with course control, water stops and registration at the 11th annual Star City Half Marathon and 5K on Nov. 23.

Four hundred runners and walkers are expected to team up with the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America and the Star City Striders in this race for a cure for leukemia and related cancers by 2000.

This year's event will be run in honor of Willie Richardson, a 4-year-old leukemia patient.

The race begins at 9 a.m. from Victory Stadium and features a challenging climb through South Roanoke. Awards will be given to top finishers, grouped by age.

Franklin County humane fund-raiser

The Franklin County Humane Society will hold its fund-raiser, ``Petpourri,'' Dec. 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Elkins Antique Auction Gallery in Glade Hill.

E.I. Randle will present a fashion show with models accompanied by animals. The evening will also include a wine-and-cheese reception, cash bar, silent auction, music by Fair Robey, door prizes and coffee and dessert.

The auction will include items ranging from golf packages, dinners at restaurants, portraits, ornaments and art work.
