RECOGNIZING RSVP HONOREES AT SHINDIG

Dozens of people who work with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County and Radford were honored at RSVP's 23rd annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration, held Nov. 13 at the Blacksburg Holiday Inn. More than 200 people attended the event, which featured music by the Shawsville High School Jazz Band and vocalist Al Sublett, as well as a song sung by Shockey Price, a RSVP member from Blacksburg.

Along with receiving their awards, honorees heard remarks by Betty Thomas, the Montgomery County administrator; Montgomery County Sheriff Doug Marrs; Karen Mayer of SHARE of Virginia; Claire Booth from the county commissioner of revenue's office; and Nancy Waters from Heritage Hall nursing home.

Honorees also received letters from President Clinton ("It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the honorees of the twenty-third annual volunteer recognition celebration of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County and Radford"); Gov. George Allen ("This privately initiated organization's efforts to serve the Montgomery County community merit our strong support and gratitude"); and Del. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg ("I am very aware of the tremendous contribution your volunteers make to this community. I have met many of them, but perhaps more importantly I have talked with the people who have benefited directly from the services supplied through your program").
