A telephone solicitation under way to raise money for community charitable activities is legitimate, according to the Montgomery County Kiwanis Club.
The Montgomery County club is using a professional fund-raising organization to support the "Famous Hollywood Magic Circus," according to member H.B. Little.
That event, to be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 7 at Blacksburg's Lyric Theatre, is similar to a program last year also sponsored by the club that raised several thousand dollars, he said.
All the money generated by the program goes to benefit charitable activities that support various community groups, such as the new Blacksburg Area Branch Library, he said.
The Christiansburg Kiwanis Club has issued a statement distancing itself from the fund-raising effort. The Christiansburg organization said the telephone solicitor was improperly using its name as a sponsor of the "Famous Hollywood Magic Circus." The Christiansburg Kiwanis has a policy to generate funds from personal contact instead of using professional fund-raisers, according to its president, Jerry Higgins.
The Montgomery County club is seeking to gain business and individual sponsors for blocks of tickets to the event via the telephone, he said.
