A Pulaski County Circuit Court grand jury has issued three indictments against former county registrar Phyllis Hanks for embezzlement.
The grand jury, meeting Monday, indicted Hanks on charges of unlawfully, feloniously and knowingly misappropriating checks amounting to $1,641, $10, and $69 on July 15. The checks were refunds from Bell Atlantic to the registrar's office. Authorities say Hanks deposited them to her personal account.
Two members of the county Electoral Board voted to fire Hanks last month, after the charges were filed and after the third member of the board resigned. Hanks had said she would step down voluntarily after the Nov. 5 elections.
