MUSIC CENTER MOVES BACK TO ITS ROOTS

LENGTH: Short : 23 lines
ILLUSTRATION: PHOTO: NHAT MEYER Staff. Vernice Law (center) leads a cheer as

a new sign is erected on the Dumas Hotel Music Center on Henry

Street, formerly known as the Henry Street Music Center. Prompted by

complaints from members of the black community and members of the

former owners' family, Total Action Against Poverty agreed to rename

the center after the Dumas Hotel, which occupied the building for

decades and was a focal point for the black community during the

days of segregation. Law's son and daughter-in-law were the last

private owners of the building. From left are Dr. Maynard Law,

Crystabel Barlow, Wilton "Duke" Lash Jr. and Darthula Barlow Lash.
