Explore Park's leaders decided Tuesday to form a committee to look for a replacement for departing Executive Director Rupert Cutler.
Cutler plans to leave by March 1 to start a land trust in Roanoke. He announced his resignation Nov. 7, six years after joining the staff of the living-history park in Roanoke County.
How widely the position will be advertised and its salary have not been determined by the facility's board, the Virginia Recreational Facilities Authority, which meets again Dec. 17.
Cutler, who came to the park from a Washington, D.C., wildlife organization in 1990, has been paid by outside donations. The new director's pay will need to come from the park's nearly $1million budget.
Jack Loeb, the board's chairman, said the approach of Thanksgiving and Christmas is "our biggest hurdle" to developing a pool of applicants. But he said he thought there was time to choose a new director before the park opens for its 1997 season in April.
At least four people, including three from the Roanoke Valley, have let board members know they are interested in the job.
