Glenvar students perform tonight

The curtain rises on Glenvar High School's fall show, "Rumors," a Neil Simon comedy, tonight at 8 and runs through Saturday in the school's auditorium.

Tickets for tonight's and Friday's performances are $2 for students and $4 for adults and are available at the door. Saturday's performance includes dinner and starts at 6:30 p.m. Dinner theater tickets are $7 for students and $9 for adults.

MidKnight Madness comes to Cave Spring

Cave Spring High School will hold its annual MidKnight Madness benefit on Friday in the school gym.

Spectators will become basketball players on the high school's court, beginning at 10 p.m. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. Admission is $2 and one can of food. Proceeds benefit The Ronald McDonald House and the Barbara Rhodes Scholarship Fund.

Local merchants will provide prizes and mementoes. Local bands will provide live music, along with music by K92-FM.

The school's basketball teams will make a grand entrance at 11:30 p.m.

Fincastle forester wins national award

John M. Hancock of Fincastle, a forester with Westvaco Corp. in Covington, has won an award from the Society of American Foresters. Hancock received the Young Forester Leadership Award, one of the Washington, D.C.-based organization's top five awards, on Nov. 12.

"Hancock has the vision, initiative and communications skills that form the core attributes of an extraordinary leader," the society said at its annual meeting in Albuquerque, N.M.

Hancock's background includes starting a 11/2-mile trail at Explore Park for the study of trees and helping teachers develop forestry-related classroom material, said Rupert Cutler, executive director of the park. At Westvaco's bleached board division in Covington, Hancock oversees the tree-cutting and management activities on 98,000 acres of company land.

The association is made up of tree farmers, state and federal government forest rangers and conservationists.

Festival of Trees begins Nov. 29

The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley will kick off its 14th annual Festival of Trees Nov. 29 on the 21st floor of the First Union Tower.

Local civic and corporate groups will sponsor the display of 25 decorated Christmas trees through Dec. 24.

The festival will be open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; and noon to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Admission is $1.50 for adults and $1 for children ages 5 to 12. Children under 5 will be admitted free.

Special rates will be available for groups of 20 or more.

Awards for best display in three categories will be handed out Dec. 19 at 7 p.m.

Valley View Mall holds Nutcracker Night

The Roanoke Ballet Theatre will host Nutcracker Night at Valley View Mall Dec. 1 to celebrate the group's participation in the Moscow State Ballet's performance of "Nutcracker '96."

The event will take place after hours at the mall, from 7:30-9 p.m. Tickets are $25 per family.

Children can visit Santa and ride the carousel at no extra cost, and there will be refreshments and door prizes. Young dancers will appear in costume, and those who wish can come in costume, too.

All proceeds benefit the Roanoke Ballet Theatre. For ticket information, call 345-6099.

Holiday homes tour benefits hospice

The McVitty House is one of the homes featured on the Carilion Hospice Holiday Homes Tour, which will be held Dec. 8 from 1 to 6 p.m.

Randall Neely of Joran's and Diane Hernandez of Boone & Co. are sponsoring the tour to benefit the hospice, which provides care to patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Tickets for the tour are $8 in advance and $10 the day of the event. The tour starts at Joran's at Promenade Shopping Center on Electric Road. Maps, tour guides and refreshments will be provided.

Banquet honors fathers, sons

The YMCA Family Center's annual Father and Son Banquet will be held on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the William Ruffner Middle School cafeteria. Kenny Lewis, a professional football player, will be the guest speaker. He is a former running back at Virginia Tech and now plays for the NFL's New York Jets. His son, Kenny Lewis Jr., the 1996 National AAU champion in the 80-meter hurdles, will also attend. Awards will be given to fathers and sons at the banquet.
