THANKSGIVING SERVICES

Roanoke Valley congregations are joining together to sponsor Thanksgiving week services for their communities. A list of services by locality follows. |WILLIAMSON ROAD| An ecumenical service supported by several congregations in North Roanoke will take place at St. James Episcopal Church, 4515 Delray St. N.W., Sunday at 7 p.m. Preaching will be the Rev. John Hamric, pastor of Airlee Court Baptist Church.

SOUTHEAST ROANOKE

Waverly Place Baptist Church, 1407 Kenwood Blvd. S.E., will be the site of the Southeast Roanoke service on Sunday at 4 p.m. A fellowship time will follow the service at which the Rev. Michael Barnes of Belmont Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will speak.

SALEM

At Shiloh Baptist Church, 40 E. Burwell St., the annual Salem Ministers Conference worship is scheduled Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Preaching will be the Rev. J. Harmon Smith, an Episcopal clergyman on the chaplaincy staff of the Virginia Veterans Care Center. The offering will support community ministries. This service will honor Robert J. Wooddall Jr. for his service to outreach ministries in Salem.

RALEIGH COURT

Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Road S.W., will hold community services Wednesday night and Thanksgiving morning for this Southwest Roanoke area. Preaching at the informal family worship at 7:30 p.m. will be the Rev. Robin Henrickson, associate pastor of Christ Lutheran Church. The morning service at 9:30 will include a message by the Rev. Dr. Dan Scott, pastor of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Offerings will go to Roanoke Area Ministries and the jail chaplaincy program. A nursery will be open for both services.

SOUTHWEST COUNTY

The Church of the Holy Spirit, 6011 Merriman Road, will be the site of a neighborhood service Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Huffman, associate pastor of Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, preaching. Donations of nonperishable food for RAM House shelter and money for the Roanoke Valley jail ministry will be accepted.

DOWNTOWN ROANOKE

Rabbi Kathy Cohen, spiritual leader of Temple Emanuel, will preach for the interfaith community service Wednesday at 7 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 344 Church Ave. in downtown Roanoke. Roanoke Area Ministries and West End Center will be recipients of the offering of food and money.

HOLLINS

Summerdean Church of the Brethren, 6900 Plantation Road, is host to a service Wednesday at 7 p.m. for the community. Child care will be provided.

BONSACK

Baptist and Methodist congregations will unite for a free breakfast at Bonsack Baptist Church on Thanksgiving morning at 7. It will be followed by worship for the community at 9 a.m. at Bonsack United Methodist, 4493 Bonsack Road. The Rev. Dr. Robert Moore, Baptist pastor, will speak.

SOUTH ROANOKE

At South Roanoke United Methodist Church, 2330 S. Jefferson St., worship is planned Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Smith, minister of First Presbyterian Church, preaching. A combined choir will sing.

OLD SOUTHWEST

The Rev. David Tanner, pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, will speak at a service Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 624 Ferdinand Ave. S.W.

BUCHANAN

The Rev. Michael Woody, pastor of Buchanan Baptist Church, will preach for the annual ecumenical service Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church. It is sponsored by the town ministerial association.

PETERS CREEK ROAD

An informal family service is planned Thanksgiving morning at 10 at Peters Creek Church of the Brethren, 5333 Cove Road. The Rev. Dr. Jack Lowe will preach.

GARDEN CITY

A combined choir of three sponsoring churches will perform Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Garden City Church of the Nazarene, 3411 Garden City Blvd. S.E. Preaching will be the Rev. Don McCaskill of Garden City Baptist. The offering will go to volunteer rescue squads.
