Lecture today at Randolph-Macon
Vincent Scully, Sterling Professor Emeritus of the History at Art at Yale University, will present ``The Architecture of Community'' today at 4 p.m. in Thoresen Theatre at Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg.
Scully wrote numerous books throughout his 48-year teaching career at Yale and twice was named to Time magazine's list of the ``Ten Outstanding American College Teachers.''
He was chosen to deliver the 24th Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the highest honor bestowed by the government for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities.

Volunteers needed for Saturday race
Sixty to 80 volunteers are needed to help with course control, water stops and registration at the 11th annual Star City Half Marathon and 5K on Saturday.
Four hundred runners and walkers are expected to team up with the Virginia Chapter of the Leukemia Society of America and the Star City Striders in this race for a cure for leukemia and related cancers by 2000.
This year's event will be run in honor of Willie Richardson, a 4-year-old leukemia patient.
The race begins at 9 a.m. from Victory Stadium and features a challenging climb through South Roanoke. Awards will be given to top finishers, grouped by age.

Franklin County humane fund-raiser
The Franklin County Humane Society will hold its fund-raiser, ``Petpourri,'' Dec. 7 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Elkins Antique Auction Gallery in Glade Hill.
E.I. Randle will present a fashion show with models accompanied by animals. The evening will also include a wine-and-cheese reception, cash bar, silent auction, music by Fair Robey, door prizes and coffee and dessert.
The auction will include items ranging from golf packages, dinners at restaurants, portraits, ornaments and art work.
Tickets are $25 per couple, $15 for singles.

'Of Mice and Men' play at Barter
ABINGDON - Barter Theatre is performing John Steinbeck's "Of Mice and Men' through Sunday with a varied cast.
Elizabeth Sherman, a recent graduate of American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, is completing degree requirements with her performance.
She will receive a master of fine arts from ACT on completion of the run.
Gabriel Morrow, who plays Curley, her husband, was an apprentice last summer with Barter's First Light Company, and is a senior at Milligan College in Johnson City, Tenn.
They will be joining seasoned cast members Charles Turner, whose stage roles have ranged from Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady" to Rosencrantz in "Hamlet" as well as TV's "L.A. Law"; George Riddle, who began a 29-year off-Broadway run in 1963 in the original production of "The Fantasticks," and Dean Whitworth, whose feature film appearances include "Sommersby."
