OATES' CONTRACT EXTENDED

Following the Rangers' first division title, Texas general manager Doug Melvin and manager Johnny Oates got one-year contract extensions through 1998.

Ex_Virginia Tech standout Oates, who is 164-142 in two seasons as the Rangers' manager, tied with New York's Joe Torre for the AL Manager of the Year award.
