'Smart' road wish list
The technology needed to make the "smart" road a testbed for automotive research could include 40-foot snow-making towers that use 175,000 gallons of water an hour and the road's own power grid. Virginia Tech has detailed for the state the infrastructure it wants in the "smart" road. Local environmental groups protest these specifications should have been made known and included in earlier environmental studies on the road. State highway officials, however, say the timing is standard for highway projects. For details, see today's front page.
Phone giant enters local Internet market

Blacksburg's Internet Business Technologies has hooked up with Bell Atlantic Internet Solutions to offer the access.
