A Roanoke man charged with stabbing his wife to death told police that he planned to kill her and then himself over their failed marriage, a detective testified Friday.
After hearing the testimony in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Judge Joseph Clarke found probable cause to support a first-degree murder charge against James Carl McCullouch, 39. Clarke certified the charge to a grand jury that will meet in December.
Wendy A. McCullouch, 31, was stabbed in the stomach in front of the Ninth Street Galaxy grocery store in Southeast Roanoke about 10 a.m. Oct. 26, police have said earlier. She died two days later at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
McCullouch and his wife had driven to the store together. McCullouch was arrested a short time later at his Dale Avenue home. He told police he was angry because his wife had been seeing another man since they separated, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Branscom.
Although McCullouch told Detective N.W. Tolrud that he planned to kill himself after stabbing his wife, police found no indication of a suicide attempt, Branscom said.
After Friday's hearing, McCullouch was returned to the Roanoke City Jail, where he is being held in lieu of a $20,000 bond.
