Museums to hold holiday open house

WYTHEVILLE - A second annual Christmas open house is planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 7 by the Rock House and Thomas J. Boyd museums, with entertainment by local singers and musicians donating their talents to the project.

This year's program is called "Christmas in the South, Late 1800s." Local businesses and clubs will "adopt" rooms in the two facilities and decorate them in the styles of the late 1800s. Tours of the museums and grounds will be offered, and refreshments will be served.

Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children, with proceeds going toward educational programs by the two museums. Tickets can be purchased at the Boyd Museum at Tazewell and Monroe streets.

Farm safety program receives approval

BLACKSBURG - A new farm safety training program created by Virginia Tech has received approval from the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. It will teach youths working on farms, in gardens or in orchards how to properly operate farm equipment and machinery.

The Department of Labor and Industry prohibits minors under 16 from operating hazardous farm equipment, such as tractors over 20 PTO horsepower. The regulations do allow minors 14 and older to operate the equipment if they have passed an approved safety training program. The requirements do not apply to minors working on a farm owned or operated by a parent.

Glen Hetzel and Stanley Burke of Tech's Biological Systems Engineering Department headed the project. The university saw a need for such a program because many traditional safety training programs are no longer available.
