CLINE, Helen Ruth Andrews, 71, of Rt. 3, Wytheville, died Saturday, November 23, 1996 at her residence. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Garfield and Sallie Davis Andrews and was retired fr om the Radford Army Ammunition Plant. She is survived by her husband, Lester E. Cline of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Frank Burns, Shirley and Don Fisher all of Roanoke, Joyce and Doug Long of Johnson City, Tenn.; five grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren, Amy and Mark Burns, Karen and Jason Fisher, Jessica Caviness, Tom and Amy Long; two sisters, Aileen Umberger, Wytheville, Iris Collins, Ivanhoe; and several nieces. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, November 25, 1996 at the Rosenbaum Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. J.C. McPeak officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. CORVIN, Ralph Vernon, 70, of Roanoke, died Sunday morning, November 24, 1996. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a member and deacon at First Christian Church (Church Avenue) and had retired as an engineer from Norfolk and Western Railway with 40 years service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl M. and Iris Irvin Corvin; his brother, Norris E. Corvin; and his sons, Leslie Travis and Guy Vernon Corvin. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Margaret Louise Corvin; his daughter and son-in-law, Sherry C. and Scott Shonhor, Roanoke; his grandchildren, Kenton Travis Shonhor and Lindsey Margaret Shonhor both of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Carolyn F. Corvin, Roanoke; niece, Jill Marie Corvin. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's North Chapel Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. James E. Rivers officiating. Interment will be in Sherwood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association or the Memorial Fund at First Christian Church in his memory. CRENSHAW, Shirley T., 51, of Roanoke, departed this life on Sunday, November 24, 1996, in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was employed by Roanoke Memorial Hospital as a supervisor in the laundry. She had been employed the re for almost 20 years. She was the widow of Waldine Crenshaw. Surviving are one son and his wife, Lloyd Michael and Janis Crenshaw, Roanoke; three grandsons, Trey, Tony Jr., and Coy; one sister, Joyce Ann Terry, Buchanan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Betty Terry, Buchanan, Otey and Alease Terry, Glasgow, Kenneth and Shirley Terry, Buchanan; and three devoted friends, Ralph Fuller, Barbara English, and Donna Quesenberry; a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 3 p.m., Wednesday, November 27, 1996, with the Rev. Frank W. Feather officiating. Interment will follow in C.C. Williams Memorial Park. ELLIOTT, Giles Clifton, 83, of Marion, entered into the present of His Lord on Saturday, November 23, 1996, in Houston, Texas. Services for Giles will be held Wednesday, November 27, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Peters Creek Rd., at 11 a.m. with burial in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Giles was born in Marion on May 16, 1913, to Herbert Kent Elliott and Eunice Elliott. He became a brick mason by trade and proudly built many of the churches and buildings in the Roanoke Valley area with his hands. After marrying his beloved Dorothy, they made their home in the Salem area for many years, and God gave him the call to a different kind of building when he called him into the ministry to reach people for Christ and build a spiritual building for eternal values. Bethel Assembly of God on Red Lane was his first church, began under Granddad Elliott's apple tree, grew to the wonderful building and community of today. Buchanan Assembly was a store front building to a beautiful church. He then became a Prebyter for the Assemblies of God and served as a minister with them since 1948. Ten years ago, he moved to Texas to be near his three children, and accepted the position of Super Seniors leader in which he helped to serve until his death. Giles and Dorothy would have celebrated 59 years o f marriage on December 26, 1996. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Clifton Elliott; father, Herbert K. Elliott; mother, Eunice Matelda Elliott; brothers, Paul Elliott, Vaughn Elliott, Roy Elliott, Herbert Elliott, all of Salem. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Elliott, Texas; son, Frank Elliott, executive salesman, and his wife, Kristi; daughters, Mary Donald, and her husband, Dr. Bob Donald, owner of Green Lawn Memorial Funerals of the Woodlands, Texas, Gloria Elliott, Houston, Texas, music evangelist of the Assemblies of God; brother, Ray Elliott, and wife, Ruby, of Georgia; sisters, Virginia Broughmon, Salem, Alene Guilliams, and husband, Frank, Salem, Alma Willis, Salem, Vivian Likens, and her husband, Vernon, Cave Springs; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephew; a host of wonderful friends like Pat Henry and Maureen Peters, who were daughters to him. The family will receive friends at Oakey's North Chapel from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

ERTEL, Chase Hallie Alexander, 5 months, of Salem, passed away Saturday, November 23, 1996. He is survived by his parents, Scott Ertel and Christina Zimmerman; grandparents, Mary Zimmerman, Phyllis and Larry Ertel. FLINT, Sally Frances Smith, 76, of Lexington, died Saturday, November 23, 1996 at her residence. She was born in Rockbridge Co., April 24, 1920, daughter the late Emmett Berkley Smith and Ressie Muterspaw Smith. Mrs. Flint was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis O. Flint. She was a member of the Central Advent Christian Church, Clifton Forge and was retired from Central Fidelity Bank of Buena Vista. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Sheila F. and George R. Garrison, Lexington; grandson and wife, Robert W. and Kim F. Garrison, New Castle; granddaughter and husband, Jennifer G. and Jerry Layne, Lexington; great-grandson, J.B. Layne Jr., Lexington. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 26, 1996 from the Harrison Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Louis Dodd officiating. Burial will follow in Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. GATES, Arthur M. Jr., 75, of Wytheville, died Saturday, November 23, 1996, in the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born in Patrick County, the son of the late Arthur M. Gates Sr., M.D. and Maybelle Lowry Gates, Nurse. He was a member of the Wytheville Presbyterian Church and founder and owner/ operator of WYVE Radio. He attended the Medical College of Virginia and graduated from Roanoke College in 1941. Mr. Gates was the Assistant Principal at his former school and taught English and Chemistry as well as coaching the baseball and basketball teams. He was a Paul Harris fellow and past president of the Wytheville Rotary Club. He was director and president of various clubs and organizations and was chosen as Citizen of the Year in 1992 by the Wytheville -Wythe-Bland Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #9, and was preceded in death by a sister, Lucille G. McGahee; and two brothers, Stuart L. and Horace L. Gates. He is survived by his wife, Estelle Jones Gates, of the home; a daughter, Debbie Gates Larson of Wytheville; a sister, Phyllis M. Gates of Myrtle Beach, S.C.. Several nieces; nephews; great-nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at 2 p.m. at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Michael Wingard and Dr. Thomas Sproule officiating.

Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. The American Legion Post #9 will conduct graveside military rites. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. HODGE, Ollie White, 82, of Radford, died Saturday, November 23, 1996 in a Radford hospital. She is survived by two sisters, Lettie Reed, Christiansburg and Elizabeth Flinchum, Salem; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. JONES, Herbert Carson, (``Hugo""), 69, of Bluefield, Va., died Sunday, November 24, 1996, at his home, following a lengthy illness. Born in Pine (Wise County), he was the son of the late Roscoe (``Wimpy"") Jones Sr. and Violet Gibson Jones of Richlands. He graduated from Richlands High School, attended Emory and Henry College and received his B.S. degree from Concord College, Athens, W.Va. in Business Administration. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, where he served as a member of the Administrative Board, and he was a member of the Richardson Friendship Sunday School Class. He was also a member of Fincastle Country Club. He was owner of Jones Furniture Company in Richlands, and he was active in the Lions Club, American Legion, Tazewell County Country Club, the University Club of Bluefield, W.Va., and the Masonic Lodge in Cedar Bluff while living there. After moving to Bluefield, Va. in 1971, he became a sales agent for Bowman Distribution, Cleveland, Ohio, traveling over southwest Virginia. In 1985, he moved to t he Bristol/Abingdon area where he continued with Bowman until he retired in 1992 and returned to Bluefield, Va., where he worked as part-time real estate agent with Regency. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Taylor Jones; brothers, Roscoe C. Jones Jr. and Harold G. Jones; sisters, Marjorie Jones Price, and Margaret Cleo Jones. He is survived by his wife, Emillie Taylor Jones; daughter, Martha (``Marty"") Jones Chaffins, and her husband, Tom Chaffins; granddaughter, Cynthia Holly Chaffins; grandson, David Taylor Chaffins; brother, James H. Jones, and his wife, Patty Sue Jones, all from Bluefield, Va. The family will receive visitors Monday, November 25, at the Dudley Funeral Home, Bluefield, Va., from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be at the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, Va. on Tuesday, November 26, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Burial will follow at the Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery, Richlands. Active pallbearers are John McClintock, Alva Tabor, Roger Mullins, Jim Boyd, K.C. SHEPPARD, Archie Elwood, 72, of Christiansburg, passed away Saturday, November 23, 1996 at his home. He was owner and operator of Archie's Wrecker Service. He was preceded in death by a son, Johnnie E. Sheppard; his father, Edward M. Sheppard; his mother, Neva S. Sheppard; stepmother, Helen C. Sheppard; and a half brother, Junior Miller. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy K.
