STUDENTS AID HOLIDAY GIVING EFFORTS

Many students, whether or not they are members of clubs and organizations, volunteer during the holidays to help the less fortunate in the area. Many teens volunteer at the Montgomery County Christmas Store while others help collect goods and make deliveries to shelters. Traditionally, more clubs and organizations get more involved the closer it gets to the Christmas holiday. However, at some schools the giving starts around Thanksgiving.

* The Student Council Association at Blacksburg High School is in the process of organizing its annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive. Clubs, organizations, individual classes and faculty departments donate Thanksgiving baskets to those who are less fortunate in the area. Each basket includes a ham with all the fixings for a traditional meal along with many nonperishable food items. Wades Supermarket provides the hams at a reduced price for the drive. The SCA's goal is to donate at least 175 baskets this Thanksgiving. More than 400 baskets have been donated since the program started in 1993.

The Blacksburg Police Department, the Christiansburg Police Department and the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office help distribute the baskets throughout the community. New River Community Action prepares the list of families who receive the baskets.

In addition, the SCA also is collecting items for the Montgomery County Christmas Store. The SCA is collecting new and used blue jeans and new socks for the store. The goal is to deliver at least 750 items. Students who contribute items are eligible for a raffle each day.

A Thanksgiving Basket Assembly will be held Wednesday at Blacksburg High. The SCA will present the collected baskets and other collected items to the New River Community Action and the Christmas Store. In addition to the guest speakers, drama students will perform the one act play "White Room of My Remembering" by Jean Lenox Toddie.

*Members of the Students Against Drunk Driving at Shawsville High School will deliver about 80 fruit baskets to the Meadowbrook Nursing Home.

Six students from the New River Valley performed at the Virginia Music Educator's Association conference Thursday through Saturday. The students were among more than 100 other Virginia high school seniors at the conference. The conference was at the Homestead in Hot Springs.

The students auditioned for the VMEA Honor's Choir in October. In addition to rehearsing for their Saturday afternoon performance, the group of students had the opportunity to listen to guest speakers. Internationally known musician/entertainer Wynton Marsalis was a guest speaker. Students who were selected for the choir were:

* Blacksburg High: Katie Sina and Ben Borden.

* Christiansburg High: David Sowers and Monica Shelor.

* Radford High: Whit Ellerman and Even Gregory.

Students from Auburn High, Blacksburg High and Shawsville schools attended workshops organized by the Statewide Affiliate Program of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and sponsored by the Blacksburg Regional Art Association. The workshops were held in October.

Fourteen students from Blacksburg participated in an all-day workshop presented by New York sculptor Ben Sherman. Students learned techniques for stone carving and each created a sculpture carved out of soapstone.

Fifteen students from Auburn and Shawsville participated in a workshop presented by Richmond artist Linda Laino. "A Kaleidoscope on Fabric: Shibori Tie-Dying Techniques" was the title of the workshop. Students spent the day experimenting with various folding techniques to create a colorful array of tie-dyed items. Students also learned alternative methods of tie-dying fabric and clothing.
