STORE APPLICATIONS ARE DUE SUNDAY

Permanent residents of Montgomery County can apply for shopping at the Christmas Store by filling out and returning an application form by Sunday.

Applications are available from all Montgomery County schools plus Blacksburg and Christiansburg Head Starts, as well as local food banks, RAFT, Legal Aid and many other organizations. Income must be at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty income guidelines. You must have dependent children living at home or be 62 or older or be disabled.

Donations to the Christmas Store can be brought to Northside Presbyterian Church, 1017 Progress St., in Blacksburg on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; or to the Christmas Store, 1655 Roanoke St., in Christiansburg (across from Hill's) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; or drop off mittens, scarves, hats and coats at the "Tree of Warmth" in the First American Federal Savings Bank, 111 E. Roanoke St. in Blacksburg. The Christmas store needs winter clothing such as heavy jackets, hats and gloves; also, baby items such as car seats, high chairs and strollers; winter boots; books; toys; dolls; and gifts for teens, such as curling irons and hair dryers. Household items (blankets, clocks, towels, sheets and kitchenware) are needed; but no furniture or large appliances.

Paper grocery bags, Christmas wrapping paper, bows, ribbon and tape are also being sought. Cash donations can be mailed to the Montgomery County Christmas Store, P.O. Box 221, Blacksburg, VA 24063-0221; make checks payable to the Montgomery County Christmas Store.

Volunteers who wish to help in the set-up of the store should call Charisse Skinner at 382-9241 or Peggy Meldrum at 382-4407. To volunteer during shopping days - a four-hour shift -call Nancy Dowling at 951-7354 or Carol Kamkee at 951-4196. To volunteer to pack up the store after shopping, call Betty and M.L. Austin at 552-1182.
