VIRGINIA TRANSFORMER TO HIRE 50

Virginia Transformer Corp. on Monday announced expansion of its Roanoke operations that will mean hiring more than 50 employees, increasing its work force by more than 25 percent.

Virginia Transformer, which designs and builds electrical transformers for the mass transit, utility, steel, auto and other heavy industries, said it will employ more than 200 people when the expansion is completed over the next three months.

The majority of the new positions generated by the expansion will be in manufacturing, but the company will have about 15 openings in engineering and other professional positions.

The company could not provide pay ranges for the new jobs.

A spokeswoman for the 25-year-old company said that the plant at 220 Glade View Drive is large enough to accommodate the extra workers without building an addition. The extra work stems from the company's focus on exports to Asia and South America.

Virginia Transformer said it experienced a 30 percent increase in sales for the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. It projects sales to reach $35 million in 1997 and to increase to more than $50 million by the year 2000.

Virginia Transformer also manufactures voltage regulators, air-cooled reactors and electrical distribution control packages.

Customers include General Electric, Siemans, Cutler-Hammer, ABB and mass transit operations around the country, such as those in New York City, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Denver and Baltimore.

The company's electrical transformers are also used in commercial buildings such as hotels, hospitals and airports.

Virginia Transformer said it provides an aggressive training program for its workers.
