UVA TWINS HONORED

Tiki and Ronde Barber have been inseparable as teammates at Cave Spring High School and the University of Virginia. They are also inseparable as first-team members of the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team released Monday.

The Barbers are the first brother combination to be named first-team All-ACC two years in a row. They are only the third brother combination to be named first team All-ACC in the same year.

Ronde Barber became the second UVa player to be named to the first team three times. The first was offensive tackle Jim Dombrowski (1983-85).

Other Cavaliers named to the first team include: offensive guard Jeremy Raley; linebacker Jamie Sharper; defensive back Anthony Poindexter; and punter Will Brice.

UVa place-kicker Rafael Garcia, linebacker James Farrior and defensive linemen Duane Ashman and Todd White were named to the second team. Tiki Barber also made the second team as a specialist.

Barber and Florida State's Warrick Dunn are the first pair of ACC running backs in 20 years to make the all-conference first-team in consecutive seasons.

Dunn, a three-time first-team member, and Barber were the first duo of runners to repeat since North Carolina State's Ted Brown and Wake Forest's James McDougald did it in 1976-77, when three running backs were named to the squad.

Heading into this weekend's games, Barber leads the ACC in rushing with 1,195 yards and 14 touchdowns, while the elusive Dunn is averaging 6.0 yards per carry and has scored 12 times despite a limited number of touches for the second-ranked and undefeated Seminoles.

Dunn needs only five yards Saturday against No. 1 Florida to become the third player in league history to have three straight 1,000-yard seasons.

There were nine first-team repeaters from a year ago, while Duke, Maryland and Wake Forest had no players selected to the first team. Meanwhile, North Carolina placed a league-high seven players on The Associated Press first team as voted on by 91 members of the Atlantic Coast Sports Writers Association.

The Tar Heels, 9-2 and headed to the Gator Bowl, were led by freshman defensive back Dre' Bly, who set the ACC's single-season record and leads and nation with 11 interceptions.

In addition, Leon Johnson, the ACC's all-time leader in all-purpose yardage, finally made the first team, this time in the newly appointed spot of specialist. Johnson averaged 24.8 yards on 14 kickoff returns and one score, while averaging 14.7 yards on 13 punt returns and another touchdown.

North Carolina's Chris Keldorf broke Florida State's four-year stronghold on the quarterback position. The junior college transfer, who broke several bones in his left ankle in a season-ending win at Duke on Saturday, completed 201 of 338 passes for 2,347 yards and a league-high 23 touchdowns.

FSU and UVa each placed six players on the first team, while Clemson had three and Georgia Tech two.

The defensive voting was led by Bly, Florida State linemen Peter Boulware and Reinard Wilson, and Clemson linebacker Anthony Simmons.
