A veteran Radford firefighter has been fired by the city after being charged with driving a fire truck while under the influence of alcohol.
Tommy Long, who had been a paid member for the Radford Fire Department, was fired "for cause" effective Tuesday, City Manager Robert Asbury confirmed Wednesday.
Long had been placed on administrative leave by Fire Chief Martin Roberts after an accident last week. Asbury said he authorized the firing.
The accident happened when Long was driving a fire truck to an accident scene and struck a parked police car.
City officials asked the state police to investigate the accident. The investigation led to a charge against Long of driving under the influence.
Long had worked for the city for more than 20 years, Asbury said.
Reached at his home in Radford Wednesday afternoon, Long said he had no comment.
