BAYSE, Frank A., 86 of Chesapeake formerly of Roanoke died in Chesapeake Tuesday, November 26, 1996. He was a retired employee of the Norfolk Naval Air Station. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Glenna Smith Bayse and one brother, Jewell F. Bayse, Jr. Surviving are one step daughter, Margaret N. Cole, Chesapeake; brother and sister-in-law, John E. and Margaret E. Bayse; one sister, Elizabeth B. Mackie; sister-in-law, Gertrude A. Bayse, all of Roanoke; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at the grave in Fairview Cemetery, 11 A.M. Friday with the Reverend W. A. Massey and the Reverend Aaron Rummage officiating. CAMPER, Helen Pullen, 86, of Daleville, died Wednesday, November 27, 1996. She was an avid Gardner, Collector, Birdwatcher and loving wife and mother. She is survived by her husband, Camillus D. Camper, Daleville; one daughter and son-in-law, Jerri C. and Bill Thomas, Towson, Md.; two sisters, Robbie Booth, Greensboro, N.C., Margaret Whitmer, Radford; two granddaughters, Kate Thomas and Jennie Thomas. HAMBLETT, Woodrow Thompson, 84 of Roanoke died Tuesday, November 26, 1996. A na tive of Crumpler, W.Va. he had retired from General Electric as a machinist with 24 years of service. He was a member of Ridgewood Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Lucinda Hamblett; brothers, James, Lawrence, and Harry Hamblett. HODGES, Nannie Pearl, 84, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, November 27, 1996 in a Roanoke hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, John William (Cover) Hodges. Surviving are ten daughters, Irene McGuire, Edith Wray, Gertrude Prater all of Rocky Mount, Louise Lynch, Redwood, Nannie Holland, North Carolina, Peggy Hawks, Axton, Joyce Hudson, Elizabeth Holcomb both of Rocky Mount, Maxine Weeks, Salem, Brenda Furrow, Rocky Mount; one son, Walter Hodges, Rocky Mount; 24 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mamie Amos, Rocky Mount, Ruby Campbell, Glade Hill, Ellen Kennett, Bassett, Dannie Smith, Rocky Mount. JANNEY, Hope Clatterbaugh Moxley, 92, died Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at her Buena Vista home. Born in Rockbridge County on October 13, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Robert Sylvester and Rebecca Jane Bare Clatterbaugh. She was a retired private duty nurse and a member of the Buena Vista Presbyterian Church. She is survived by a daughter, Betty Moxley Snyder, Buena Vista; a long-time friend and caregiver, Jack Laughlin; a number of nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 1996, at Rockbridge Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Rebekah J. Maul officiating. KELE, Max H., 60, of 2831 West Knollwood Court, Peoria, Ill., died at 10:25 p.m. Monday, November 25, 1996, in the emergency room of Saint Francis Medical Center. Born on August 3, 1936, in Weatherfo rd, Texas, to Floyd and Sally Mae Williams Kele, he married Myrna Parker on June 7, 1958, in Indianapolis, Ind. She survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Kelli Kele Davidson of Peoria and Kathryn Kele Bruch of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Mildred Lamke of Hurst, Texas, Ruth Bellamah of San Antonio, Texas, and Faye Deputy of Cicero, Ind. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Darrell, Thomas, Rebecca and Natalie Bruch. He was preceded in death by his parents, one niece and his grandparents. He was a Korean War veteran, serving with the Atomic Energy Commission through the Army. He was present during the Atom Bomb, and served on the Bikini and Annatokoc Islands, the Marshall Islands, and Los Alamos, N.M. He went to college on the GI bill. He was a member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church in Peoria. He received his Bachelor of Arts undergraduate degree in History from North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. He received his Master's and a Ph.D. in History from Tulane. He served as a faculty member of the History department at the University of Florida. In 1975, he became Associate Dean and Director of Humanities at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Professor of History at Bradley in 1978, where he served as dean until 1992. Since 1992, he had been a history professor at the university and Director of the Master of Liberal Studies Program. He was an expert on Nazi Germany. His book, ``Nazis and Workers: National Socialist Appeals to German Labor,"" received critical acclaim when it was published in 1972. He was the author of numerous scholarly papers on Nazis. He was a member of many professional organizations, the German Studies Association, the Southern Historical Association, Phi Kappa Phi and the Blue Key, the American Historical Association and the Southwestern Historical Association. He served as a consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities for five years, as well as the Illinois Humanities Council. He was instrumental in the development of a new general education program at Bradley in 1981. Central to the program was the development of a new course in Western Civilization that was funded by an NEH grant. After leaving the Dean's office in 1992, he returned to teaching courses in Western Civilization and German History. He directed the nationally known Berlin Seminar. This program has been held every summer in Berlin for historians from throughout the United States. He was a member of the Peoria World Affairs Council and served on its board. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 30, 1996, at his church. Father Gus Franklin will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cumerford-Endsley-Doggle Funeral Home in Peoria. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Peoria. MANGELS, Dean William, 37, of Saddlebrook, N.J., formerly of Blue Ridge, died Tuesday, November 19, 1996. Funeral services were held in New Jersey.

NATHE, Margaret Lawhorn, 77, of San Diego, Calif., died on Sunday, November 24, 1996, following a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Leonard H. Nathe; and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel S. Lawhorn of Vinton as well as four sisters and four brothers. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mary Anne Ryan, Harveysburg, Ohio; and one son, Leonard Lawhorn Nathe, San Diego, Calif.; and one sister, Mrs. My rtle Marlowe, Key West, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Nathe was born and raised in Vinton, Va., attended William Byrd High School and graduated from Radford University. She was a Captain in the Air Force and served in World War II. The body will be cremated. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

NOELL, Nadine Shartzer, 76, of Vinton, died Wednesday, November 27, 1996 at her home. She was the widow of Mason A. Noell. A member of Vinton Baptist Church and was retired from The Kroger Company. Surviving are a son, Ronald Mason Noell and wife, Shirley of Roanoke; a grandson, Ronald M. Noell Jr. and wife, Tracey of Vinton; great-granddaughter, Taylor Noell; stepgranddaughter, Tamalyn Reed of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Wavie Griffith of Vinton; and many special friends. Funeral services will be conducted from Oakey's Vinton Chapel 1 p.m. Friday, November 29, 1996 with the Rev. Dr. William L. Ross officiating. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery. PHELPS, Eugene Graham, (``Gene''), 58, of Christiansburg, died suddenly Tuesday, November 26, 1996, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was the son of the late George and Gertrude Meridith Phelps of Pulaski. RASNAKE, Martha Ruth, 83, of 131 Larch St., Bluefield, W.Va., died Monday, November 25, 1996, at her residence. Born on April 29, 1913 in Cleveland, Va., she was the daughter of the late Garland Gilbert and Ellen Musick Gilbert. She was a housewife and formerly lived at War, W.Va., and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Dock Rasnake on September 23, 1965; six brothers; and four sisters. Surviving are four sons, William Carr Rasnake of San Antonio, Texas, Johnny Rasnake and his wife, Frances, of Princeton, W.Va., Kenneth Rasnake of Niagara Falls, N.Y., James Lewis Rasnake of Bluefield, W.Va.; daughter, Mrs. Lyle (Lena Irene) Brewster of War, W.Va.; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Musick of Cleveland, Va., Mrs. Clarence (Georgia) Powers of War, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel in Bluefield, W.Va. with Rev. Curtis L. Honaker Sr. officiating. SMITH, Leon L., (``CY""), 67 of Roanoke died Tuesday, November 26, 1996 at Lewis Gale Hospital. Born in Vermont, Mr. Smith had been a long time area resident. He had retired in 1984 as a truck driver and was also a member of the Teamster Union. He was a Navy veteran and also served in the Korean War as an Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his wife who died 1975, Janice Godfrey Smith. Survivors include his sons, Kevin and David Smith of Roanoke; brother, Harold Smith; sister Rosemary Vigor, both of Wells, Vt. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 29, 1996 Noon at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Roanoke. The family will receive friends at John M. TAYLOR, Alice Catherine Hall, 96, of Salem, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 1996. She was born in Pulaski County on November 17, 1900. She was the youngest child of C. A. and Naomi Hall. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James Taylor; one son, James H. Taylor; three sisters and five bro thers. She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Rachel Poff, Katherine and Frank Morris, both of Salem; daughter-in-law, Joy F. Taylor, Pulaski; also surviving are eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. TAYLOR, Rebecca Ruth, 85, of Galax died Tuesday, November 26, 1996 in Laurel Meadows Nursing Home. Mrs. Taylor was born in Bristol, Va. on May 16, 1911 to Rev. Charles Melton and Flora Bell Pope Melton. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Britton Taylor Sr. She is survived by one daughter, Ann Pope Taylor, Galax; one son, John Britton Taylor, Jr., Galax; three grandsons, Richard Lee Taylor, Brian Kelly Taylor and Chad Dean Taylor; one step-granddaughter, Felcia Ann Barron; and three great-grandsons.
