NORTHWEST MAN SHOT; CITY MAN DENIED BOND

A Northwest Roanoke man was shot three times Thanksgiving afternoon.

Responding to a report, Roanoke police found Fred L. Wiley, 19, of the 700 block of Fairview Avenue, lying on his stomach in the 2500 block of Centre Avenue Northwest about 12:25 p.m. Wiley had been shot twice in the stomach and once in the buttocks, police said.

Wiley was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was still undergoing surgery at 5:45 p.m. A nurse declined to comment on Wiley's condition when contacted later.

When police approached, Wiley was conscious and accused a man of shooting him, police said.

David Anthony Farmer, 19, of the 2500 block of Centre Avenue, was charged later in the afternoon with malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Farmer was being held in the Roanoke city jail without bond Thursday night, a jailer said.

Investigators said a motive for the shooting is not certain, but may involve a female friend of the men. Farmer told police that he had had an altercation with Wiley earlier in the day.

Police also reported an unexploded pipe bomb was found about 10 a.m. Wednesday on the roof of the downtown building that houses Pinpoint Target Marketing.

Pinpoint is owned by The Roanoke Times and occupies the building's wing on Norfolk Avenue behind the main newspaper building on Campbell Avenue.

The Virginia State Police bomb squad removed the device and detonated it at the city police range. Police blasted one of the two end caps off the pipe with a 12-gauge shotgun.

Because galvanized metal does not rust, police said at this point they do not know how long the bomb was on the roof.
